Two Involved in Prostitution Causing Public Nuisance Arrested by Bunder Police

Mangaluru: Two women who were involved in prostitution and luring customers near the Clock Tower were arrested by the Bunder Police, near Clock Tower here on October 18.

The arrested have been identified as Priya (26) and Madhu (30).

On October 16, Saroja (name changed) who travels by bus from Lady Goschen to her destination called mangalorean.com and requested to help stop the prostitution going on openly from a long time near the Clock Tower. She said that the situation was embarrassing. To see a number of women involved in luring customers openly on the street was disgusting.

Saroja said, “When I travel by bus, I see some women standing outside the cloth store, opposite to the clock tower luring customers and supplying girls. The situation is so embarrassing to see women from outside the district involved in such work openly without any fear. I always see a woman wearing a black shawl on her head and busy answering phone call and supplying girls to customers.”

On October 18 evening, Team Mangalorean noticed three women on the same spot dealing with customers and supplying girls. The police who were informed of the illegal activities, immediately reached the spot and arrested two women. Others including a man of the same gang fled from the spot.

The arrested were taken to the Bunder police for further investigation.

Speaking to mangalorean.com DCP Crime and Traffic Uma Prashanth said, “We are now aware of the illegal activities in the area, we will take all the necessary measures in this regard. The police should always be alert in such matters to prevent crime. We also need the support of the public to curb such illegal activities in the city”.

Two observations:

1. It’s interesting that public notified media first. This shows how people trust media more than Police. It’s hard to believe that Police were not aware of this. Like many other things, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some ‘understanding’ to turn a blind eye towards this.

2. Prostitution should be made legal. What’s wrong if two adults decide to enjoy sexual acts at their privacy over a pre-negotiated price? Our outlook on soft drugs and prostitution need to change.
