Telgi, stamp paper scam kingpin, critical

Bengaluru: Abdul Karim Telgi, the kingpin of the multi-crore stamp paper scam, was admitted to Victoria Hospital on Thursday.

He has suffered multi-organ failure, and his condition is serious, prison officials and doctors said.

Telgi has spent 16 years in jail. In July, the High Court acquitted him in one of the three cases in which he was convicted.

He has not been able to stand for four years. The prison authorities at Parappana Agrahara have allowed him a wheelchair. He is now on a ventilator. Telgi was convicted in 2006 along with many of his associates for printing fake stamp papers. The scandal had rocked the state in early 2000.

He has diabetes, hypothyroidism and hypertension, besides a host of other ailments, prison sources said.
