AmmajiVsAppaji? Ragi MuddeVsBisibele Bath? Indira CanteenVsAppaji Canteen?
Mangaluru: Its seems like there’s Canteen Wars going on! While Indira Canteens have been witnessing long queues in most of the areas ever since their launch, the couple of Appaji Canteen in South Bengaluru, started by JD(S) MLC T A Saravana, have already been a big hit with over 1,000 people relishing the south Karnataka fare at subsidized prices every day. The Appaji Canteens, are named after former PM H D Deve Gowda, the father of H D Kumaraswamy, the next Chief Minister of Karnataka. The Appaji canteen is the brainchild of JD(S) MLC T A Sharavana and anyone can avail low-priced food here.
According to sources, it is learnt that when interviewed most of the people opined that food provided at Appaji Canteen was tastier and healthier than Indira Canteens. Small queues and more quantity of food served in each plate also attract many to Appaji Canteen. Ragi mudde and the idli are the favourites here. For office goers and school students, who are not so fussy about taste and want to eat at a lower cost, visiting Indira Canteen is the best bet. Earlier people could take parcel food from Appaji canteen, but recently they have stopped that service, since they always run out of food when customers packed food in large quantities.
For a mere Rs 5, a person can enjoy a hearty breakfast, with options ranging from Tatte Idli, Vada, Kesari bath and Khara Bath. Need a cuppa? You can get tea or coffee for just Rs 3. The lunch includes Ragi balls, Soppina Saaru, Rice and Sambar and a variety of rice bath plus happala and is priced at Rs 10 per plate. While the Siddaramaiah government had set up of Indira canteens in many places in the state, which were designed on the lines of ‘Amma canteen’ of Tamil Nadu, now that HDK who will be the CM soon, rumours are that JD{S} is planning to open more Appaji canteens in the state soon. But by launching many Appaji Canteens, JD(S) could go in for stiff competitions with Indira Canteens.
Now plans are afoot to open the Appaji canteens in all Assembly constituencies in Bengaluru, and later in the state too. A technical team had been appointed to maintain hygiene in the canteen. Besides, a see-through kitchen had been constructed for people to see the food preparation. At present Namma Appaji Canteen only serves breakfast and lunch and depending on the success, dinner would be provided at Rs 10 in the nearest future. The required fruits, vegetables, rice, pulses and cereals would be purchased directly from farmers. Chances are that Mangaluru could also see couple of Appaji Canteens sooner or later!
