Mangaluru: Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim held a all political party leaders meet in connection with the forthcoming Gram Panchayat elections, at his office premises here on May 25.
Addressing the leaders DC Ibrahim said that the Gram Panchayat elections will be held on May 29. The district administration is all set for the elections which will have 50% reservation for women.
The candidates have filed their nominations from May 11 and the last date for filing nominations was on May 18. Applications were reviewed on May 19, until May 21 candidates can withdraw their nominations. On May 29 the voting will begin at 7:00 AM and end at 5:00 PM. Votes will be counted on June 6, 2015.
Candidates have chosen their election symbol on priority basis from the election officer. The election code of conduct has been implemented from May 10. The elections will be held in 227 Gram Panchayats. In Mangaluru, the elections will be held in 55 gram panchayats, In Bantwal 57, Belthangady 46, Puttur 41 and Sullia28 gram panchayats. In Pudu of Bantwal Taluk, Venoor of Beltangady Taluk and Arambodi Gram Panchayat have not completed their tenure, so these 5 gram panchayats will not have elections on May 29.
According to the voters list on May 1, 2015, in Mangaluru Taluk there are 146318 men and 156289 women voters, Bantwal 126118 men and 125338 women,Beltangady 93829 men and 92412 women, Puttur 90129 men and 88776 women and in Sullia 48758 men and 47993 women. In 227 gram panchayats 505152 men and 510808 women (total 1016024) will cast their votes on May 29.
In Mangaluru Taluk there are 342 polling booths, 49 auxiliary polling booths, total 391, Bantwal 326 polling booths and 15 auxiliary polling booths, total 341,Beltangady 211 polling booths, 23 auxiliary polling booths, total 234, Puttur 193 polling booths, 28 auxiliary polling booths, total 221 and Sullia 112 polling booths and 10 auxiliary polling booths total 122.
There are 227 Gram Panchayats with 1212 polling booths out of which 378 are sensitive, 183 booths very sensitive, 54 booths Naxal affected and 597 normal. The final list of the candidates who are contesting the gram panchayat elections are ready. Mastering and D-mastering and counting centers have been identified, for Mangaluru, the center will be in Padua Educational institutions, in BantwalInfant Jesus English Medium School, Beltangady SDM College, PutturVivekananda English medium school and in Sullia, Nehru Memorial School.
We have trained 229 election officers and 249 assistant election officers to conduct the elections smoothly. According to the state election commission the election campaigns should be banned from May 27, 7 AM. For the GramPanchayat election the state election commission will not distribute the slips to the voters, if the candidates are willing to distribute the slip of voters name and booth number, they can do so with their own expenses. We have received many complaints that some candidates have distributed pamphlets with photos of political leaders which is against the election code of conduct. We will take strict action against such candidates, said the DC.
ADC Sadashiv Prabhu, Kodijal Ibrahim, Nitin Kumar, Vasanth Achari, Mithun Raiand others were also present.
