Mangaluru: Vidya Vinutha D”souza from the PG Department of Social Work, St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore is awarded Philosophy in Doctorate (PhD) from the University of Mysore for her thesis entitled “Employment Concerns and Prospects among Deep Sea Fishers in Coastal Karnataka- A Social Work Perspective”. This Thesis was prepared under the guidance of Dr Mohan A K, Associate Professor and Chairperson, Department of Social Work, Central University of Kerala, Kasargod.
Dr Vidya Vinutha D’souza is the Wife of Shinoy V Joseph and daughter of Balthazar D’souza and Mrs. Nora Rita D’souza. She hails from Jeppinamogeru and belongs to St Alphona’s Church, Kankanady, Mangaluru.
In the study conducted, Dr D’Souza has highlighted on the issues and concerns faced by the deep sea fishing vessel captains in terms of their health, safety, training and welfare. The concerns they face while sailing in deep sea for their livelihood is explained by Dr D’Souza in her thesis along with the recommendations to the stakeholders for improving the conditions of work of deep sea fishermen. The status available to the organized sector workers but unavailable to the unorganized sector workers especially to the deep sea fishermen is highlighted in her study conducted in the major fishing ports of Coastal Karnataka.
