Speaking to the mediapersons, Ramanath Rai said that the Air India Express Flight 812, that was flying from Dubai to Mangaluru on May 22, 2010, overshot the runway while landing and crashed killing 158 passengers. This is the third deadliest aviation disaster in India.

Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said, “Of the passengers who were killed in the crash, 12 bodies were not identified by their families so we had buried them in Kuloor. To set up a memorial for the air crash victims, we thought of making a park in and around the airport but changed our mind, since it was not appropriate to have a park near the crash site. Later, we thought of constructing the park in Kuloor junction where the 12 unidentified bodies have been buried.”

He further said that NMPT has planned to spend Rs 60 lakh for the memorial park, with Rs 30 lakh already being spent. “Once the work is completed, we have requested the NMPT authorities to hand over the park to MCC for maintenance. The memorial will also be constructed at a cost of Rs 9 lakh.”

DCP Law and Order Shantharaj, ADC Kumar, MUDA Chairman Ibrahim Kodijal, Airport Director Radhakrishna, Deputy director of NMPT Suresh P Shirwadkar, MCC commissioner Dr Gopalkrishna and members of bereaved families were also present.
