Dissecting Science

By Dr. B. M. Hegde, India [ Published Date: February 11, 2010 ]

"Intellectual integrity made it quite impossible for me to accept the myths and dogmas of even very great scientists, more particularly of the belligerent and so-called advanced nations. Indeed, those intellectuals who accepted them were abdicating their functions for the joy of feeling themselves at one with the herd." - "Bertrand Russell (1872-1969)

I was in Kolkata recently where I met a young lady who is an accomplished scientists trained at some of the best American Universities. While discussing we came to the subject of vitamin C and the scientific taboo word "Hormesis." She was telling me that she used to work at the Linus Pauling Institute with large doses of vitamin C and was surprised with her results. The professor was of the view that she was not honest. She was very candid that she did work hard at it but her results did not match the "official" accepted line of thinking.

What is Hormesis?

I explained to her the concept of "hormesis" first popularized by Edward Teller, the father of American Hydrogen bomb and, later, by Edward Calabrese, a one time director of research with Linus Pauling himself. I also discussed with her how Linus Pauling had condemned both the men for their scientific finding of "hormesis" and painted them as dangerous people for the world! He, of course, got his second Nobel Peace Prize after that. Last time I wrote about it one of my friends got very upset. I could understand how truth hurts sometimes! Hormesis is the process where a very small dose of most chemicals show bio-positivity while the larger dose of the same chemical could be bio-negative. While this is the truth, it went against Pauling’s pet theory that large doses of vitamin C keep humans live here forever!

The global warming fiasco:

This brings to mind the latest fiasco of the Nobel Prize for the "so called" global warming. This is nothing new for science. If one goes through the history of Nobel Prizes from day one, one will realise that most of the time the wrong people got it for the wrong reasons. The severity of the present winter all over the globe suggests the possibility of global cooling rather than warming. Florida has snow fall which did not happen in the last one hundred years. I still remember the year 1972 when I was at the Middlesex Hospital, London, when the winter temperatures were very low and the winter got extended by a month or so. The agricultural output fell significantly and they were predicting linearly that the global cooling has started and that we were in for another ice age. Of course, no one got the Nobel as there was no such lobby like the cliché "global warming" today to make a film.

The global warming pundits are also predicting the unpredictable future of this world which goes through cool-warm cycles periodically but, not linearly. The new science of Chaos would defeat their nefarious designs. The third world is goaded to stop industrializing as if it is the CO2 output from the industry that is going to heat the globe. One cow’s fart, belching and the putty that it evacuates daily would give out as much methane as a medium sized industry, which is many times more powerful global warmer than the poor industrial gas. Water vapour from the sea is another big player in the process. Nature would manage most insults and I wonder if our efforts at avoiding carbon dioxide would do much to help the warming if it has set in.

Is science the whole truth for all times to come?

If science is the truth for all times, it becomes religion and not science. Rather, science is a truth at that point in time and could (should) change with more information and further studies. Let us take energy for example. What is energy and what is its relation to matter? While Einstein’s celebrated formula was hailed by all, it does not fit the bill completely. At the sub-atomic level matter and energy are interchangeable. M=E is the new formula put forward by Hans Peter Duerr, Einstein’s one time colleague and the present Emeritus President of the Max Planck Institute in Munich. While he calls it as a-duality, he claims that the Indian seers knew about it for thousands of years and called it advaitha.

The world of science knows just about 5% of the world energy. Remaining part is formed by dark energy and dark matter (95%). Science has no clue about that vast reservoir of energy. Even vacuum has plenty of energy. Many of the healing modalities using occult energy are being assessed and quantified by modern scientific methods today.

Be that as it may, science can go down as far as the last bit of an atom, the lepton or the lepto-quark. Where did the lepto-quark come from? It is still a mystery for conventional science. But teleology and spirituality did have answers to the question. Way back in the beginning of the last century three physicists came to India to study yoga and Siddhi. They have described the atomic structure of nine elements from Hydrogen to Helium in their book Occult Chemistry* published in 1920 in Madras. They could see the details through their "third eye" during their siddhi state. They have also alluded to the origin of the lepton.

The authors of the book, "Edwin D Babbitt, Annie Besant, and C. W. Leadbeater found in their research that the basic particles of ether, called Anu, appear as complex vortexes of substances coming from a preceding world (ethereal world).  Each vortex consists of ten independent but interrelated closed strings. Some modern physicists found that Babbitt et. al. observations are consistent with modern day quark models and these observations bear a striking resemblance to the basic ideas of the Superstring theory." Writing thus in his article, Late Glen Gordon, a NASA scientist, concludes "that the creation of all physical particles and, consequently, of all physical matter can be visualized as a dynamic, continuous process."

That apart, no scientist worth his salt has been able to see even an electron. When one tries to see an electron a photon has to leave the electron to hit the observer’s retina. Even if one photon leaves the electron the electron no longer remains an electron! Werner Heisenberg’s uncertainty is the only permanent truth in physics! All other Nobel winning discoveries have only been proved wrong soon after. JJ Thomson and his son PJ Thomson, both from the Cavendish Institute with a gasp of 30 years, got Nobels for showing diametrically opposite ideas of an electron. Time proved both wrong. Many other Nobel laureates like Erwin Schrodinger, Niels Bohr etc. were proven wrong by time alone. Lesser mortals, who call themselves scientists, have been arrogant about their ideas and they all belong to the category described by Bertrand Russell in the quotation given at the beginning of this article.

Lay readers could get a bird’s eye view of what is happening inside this closed system called science which is given a large halo around it. In fact, science should just be organized curiosity peppered with logical skepticism to understand this universe which still eludes scientific scrutiny in many areas. The neat theories of the venerated great scientists are but imaginations running riot. Students are taught science with this aura and they go back with the view that anything that is backed by science is the final truth. Arrogance of some scientists adds insult to injury. Let us teach the innocent student that the scientific pursuit should be her/his aim. They need not be PhDs to do good research. Some of the all time greats were not scientists in the true sense of the term as it is understood today. Francis Bacon was a trained barrister. Einstein was a clerk in the Patent office in Germany. Isaac Newton was a practising astrologer, an alchemist, a mathematician and a physicist-all in one. We should develop scientific temper and not accept anything that can not be scientifically verified. That does not mean that anything that is verified is the truth necessarily.

In conclusion:

"Science is just making models, mostly mathematical constructs, which with verbal jargon, are supposed to work", wrote John von Neumann, an American scientist of Hungarian origin. Let us demystify science for the good of mankind. Just because genetically modified food has been scientifically proven to be a good business idea it could be eventually fatal to humans. Let us use our good sense to verify what happens inside the human system (in vivo) when a genetically modified food is put in. What that food does inside the body need not be the same that you see in the laboratory (in vitro) as there are so many imponderables inside this machine called the human body?  The general public must have an inside view of science and what technology does to science for the sake of making big money for the industry. John Adams, the second President of the USA, was of the opinion that "While all other Sciences have advanced, that of Government is at a stand; little better understood; little better practiced now than three or four thousand years ago." So beware of genetically modified food!

"A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject."-- Winston Churchill

Tim, Canada :
A great article on common sense. Once we think we know everything as a society, we are in trouble.
SHENOY R, India :
Hey Shenoy'mam, why don't you admit it that you're an Ortho? -Chris

Shhh! Not so loud. Some one is already using my identity and writing posing as me. He may start hitting the nail and drive it into wrong places.:)
James Fernandes,Barkur, USA :
How sweet it's to catch a fish (Cyber bully) without losing a worm!
Chris Rego, UAE:
Hey Shenoy'mam, why don't you admit it that you're an Ortho? How long will you take us down Carstreet with JUST your one-liners for co?
John, MD, USA :
James, Dr B M Hegde has spent considerable amount of time preparing this article for our reading pleasure, and for improving our knowledge.
An appreciation of that article, and a thank you to the author should be the first thing we should do!
Forget about asking more questions to the eminent doctor. Writing an article takes a great deal of effort.
Did you appreciate what he has written?
Thank you Doctor Hegde for improving our knowledge and common sense, without expecting any reward for your hard work.
James Fernandes,Barkur, USA :
What about the experiments on heredity of plants and animals by Gregor Mendel, the father of genetics, (posthumously)? Was he a PhD? He died disappointed because his results were rejected, then. Some people are born a head of their times.
The “Temple Bulls” are still dominant for cows, right?”
SHENOY R, India :
I am planning to go through this article during this week end. It takes time to undersatnd, digest, assimilate the discussion contained here. May be, and just may be I will express my opinion if any. Sounds interesting at a cursory glance [like most of my text books I had the opportunity to study].
Roshan Pais, India :
Well this in my opinion article has so many logic - I quickly skimmed through it and retained 5 % of it.

I agree that Truth in science is dependent on information, evidence and knowledge and hence is dependent on the present paradigm.

When there is more information and evidence available- paradigms change.

Contrary to Individualism - as the greatest evil (as purported here) - individuals become insignificant in science - even Nobel Laureates.

Some of them become arrogant and hence forget the tenets which brought them success - hence they are irrelevant. Arrogance is part of human nature and scientists are not exempted nor are physicians.

Teaching science - is that scientific enough? Are we following those tenets - getting the take home message of what is science is all about and its limitation to our students? Nah!!

How can a teacher - who has not experienced the Science can teach science to students?
Teacher himself (herself should be a better student).

I agree with BM Hegde when he says - what we learn is not the final truth and it can change.

Regarding Linus and his obsession with Vitamin C as the amrutha (elixir) for all ills, he may not be aware of the Old Indian wisdom of: In excess even amrutha become Visha".

The same vitamin C (or anything else) can be either good bad or ugly -depending on" where? "how much" or "how less"

Keep writing Dr. Hegde but keep it simple - may be then I will retain more !!
emmaliza, USA :
Thank you, Dr. Hedge, for this profound analysis. If all of our children could read this the world of the future would be a much better place. I will print this and add it to my book of meditation (which is mostly about living a Christian life and the lasting value I will leave behind).
