CM Siddaramaiah Off to Belgium to See Son in Hospital

Bengaluru: Sources close to chief minister Siddaramaiah had earlier said that his son Rakesh had met with a road mishap in Belgium while being on a tour with a few friends on Tuesday night.

However, now it is clarified that he has been suffering from problems related to pancreas and liver and has been admitted to University Hospital in Brussels, Belgium.

When he got the information, the CM is said to have called up Union external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj in Delhi and sought her good offices in arranging for appropriate medical treatment through the embassy of India in Brussels.

She responded immediately and spoke to the Indian diplomatic corps in Belgium and ensured priority attention. CM’s wife Parvati, second son Dr Yatindra, the wife of Rakesh and a family doctor have flown to Belgium by a special flight the same night.

Siddaramaiah told mediapersons at his official residence ‘Cauvery’ on Wednesday that he too would leave for Belgium by a flight at 4-30 am on Thursday, July 28. He informed that his son’s condition was reported to be stable.

He is being accompanied by IAS officer and principal secretary to chief minister L K Atheeq. There are plans, if need be, to shift Rakesh to Mount Elizabeth hospital in Singapore, where Rajinikanth and Ambareesh had been treated in the past , or to a high-end hospital in the US . A decision regarding this would be taken after Siddaramaiah’s arrival in Brussels, said close sources.

In view of this sudden development, the KPCC coordination committee’s meeting to have been held on Saturday, July 30 has been called off. Digvijaya Singh, the party functionary in charge of the state, also has cancelled his visit to the city.

Mangaluru report:

On receiving the news, a large number of CM’s well-wishers and Congress party workers gathered in the Syed Madani dargah in Ullal and offered prayers for the early recovery of Rakesh Siddaramaiah.
