DySP Ganapathy Suicide – Kodagu Crippled over Two Days
Madikeri: Seeking sacking of minister K J George from the state cabinet and action against him since he was one of the three persons said to have been named by DySP Ganapathi before his death, the Hindu Jagarana Vedike and Vishwa Hindu Parishat called for a total shutdown of Kodagu district on Thursday, July 14.
Since business establishments, bus operators and various organizations gave token support, it resulted in life coming to a standstill in the entire district. The bandh was in force from 6 am to 6 pm.
The observance of bandh was fairly peaceful excepting for sloganeering, demonstrations, burning of tyres and effigies of the chief minister and George.
The BJP’s district unit announced that if no action was taken, it would take large groups of women activists to Bengaluru to lay siege to chief minister’s house.
Similar protests and demonstrations were held in smaller towns like Kushalnagar, Siddapur, Pollibetta and Nellihudikeri.
BJP workers shut down the gate of boundary between Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu at Sampaje and squatted on the road, blocking the traffic.
In Suntikoppa, pro-Kannada activists joined the BJP workers in the protest and enforcing the bandh. In Napoklu, VHP, Bajrang Dal, BJP, JD(S), Kodava Samaj and other organizations joined in the protest.
Thousands of commuters, travelling within district or passing through the districts, were stranded at various points.
Friday, July 15
Normal life was disturbed again on Friday, when vehicle jathas organized by Kodava Samajas from different towns sped towards Madikeri, choking the town totally.
The Kodava Samaja of Ponnampet took the lead. A memorandum, to be forwarded to the state government, was presented to Dr Richard D’Souza, the deputy commissioner of Kodagu.
The memorandum has demanded a compensation of Rs 5 crore to the family of the late DySP.
