Mangaluru: Early Learning Centre (ELC Kindergarten) in association with Indian Montessori Centre introduces a new chapter in early education in Mangaluru. Montessori has become a synonym for early education in India. However, very few learning environments understand the true philosophy of Montessori or implement the true Montessori method. ELC Kindergarten is on a mission to better the lives of our youngest citizens and has partnered with Indian Montessori Centre (IMC) – the most distinguished centre for early education training in India.
What is the Montessori method? How is it different?
The early years of an individual’s life are very important. Early education lays the foundation for a child’s growth and development. In the Montessori method of education, developed by Madam Maria Montessori, the child “self-learns” through a self-directed and self-correcting approach – this is a much more organic process, compared to traditional methods that focus on teaching.
While everyone agrees that childhood should be associated with joy, love and learning, today’s reality stands in stark contrast. An artificial environment is created where the child is expected to sit on a desk, is rarely allowed to go outside a classroom and a fear is created to enforce ‘discipline’. Children are subjected to tests, uniforms, textbooks, cursive writing and rote learning at a young age. The ability to write is considered as the most important marker of success while play, music, dance, art, stories and dramatics are sidelined. Science is ignored and libraries for young children are non-existent. Independent thinking is not a priority and instead, the emphasis is on standardization, marks and entrance exams. Classrooms are overcrowded and teachers are not adequately trained or empowered.
Indian Montessori Training Courses (IMTC) is considered to be the best in India. It began under the auspices of Maria Montessori herself. While many schools claim to follow the Montessori method, there is no affiliated Montessori school in Mangaluru and no authorized training centre of the Montessori method. To improve the quality of early education in Mangaluru, ELC is bringing in a teacher training programme of the highest standards to our city. After all, every person deserves good teachers who understand and respect them, especially during the most important time of their lives.
Who can enroll?
You need to have passed your 12th Boards to take up this course. Age and gender doesn’t matter. What does is that you love children and are passionate about education. A course done under this institute will give you a deep and profound understanding of the Montessori approach to education and a good understanding of life itself.

What does the course contain?
During the course, you will learn how to help a child academically in the fields of language, arithmetic, science, geography etc. Your training will go beyond just “academics”- you will learn how to follow the child and help them grow in a non-intrusive manner.
The total duration of the course is 600 hours (June 2017-May 2018) and classes will be held on weekends. The course fee is Rs. 29,000.
There are two free seats for Anganawadi teachers/teachers of Government schools who want to enroll. Please bring a recommendation letter from your school principal and we will consider your application.

About IMC:
Pre-school formal education (for children below five years) began in our country in the early 40s with the arrival of Madam Montessori in 1939, who had to leave Italy during the Fascist regime there. Living in India, she began to train Montessori teachers for the next 10 years. She left India in 1949 leaving her representative Mr. Joosten to train teachers all over India. This mission continues today and the training programme in Bengaluru has since been run by people directly trained by Madam Montessori such as Late Mr. Joosten, Late Mr. S. R. Swamy and Ms. Meenakshi Sivaramakrishnan. Currently, it is headed by Ms. Shamala Rao, Ms Sudha Prasad, Mr.Anantha Padmanabha, Ms. Deepa Kamath, Ms Sudha Gopinath and Ms. Latha Rao. In Mangalore, the course will be conducted with the guidance of IMTC director Ms. Latha Rao who also trains teachers at IMTC Koramangala.
