Part of BMC-managed foot over bridge near CST collapses; 2 dead, 16 injured
Mumbai: In a horrific incident, a section of a foot-over bridge near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai collapsed on Thursday, leaving at least two persons dead. Sixteen people have received injuries, as per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The Mumbai Police inputs peg the figure of injured at 23. The incident took place near The Times of India building and the Anjuman Islam College.
According to the Mumbai Police, the bridge connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Platform 1 north end with BT Lane has collapsed. The injured have been shifted to St George Hospital and Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital in Mumbai’s Fort district.
The injured are being rushed to nearby hospitals. In the wake of the incident, traffic in the entire area has been affected. Commuters are being urged to use alternate routes.
Senior Mumbai police officers are on the spot. Rescue operations are underway.
According to Faye D’Souza, the executive editor of Mirror Now, the bridge was managed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and was “fixed and revamped” in 2016. She tweeted that the bridge is just 500 metres from the BMC HQ.
