A deathnote has been found by the police alleging that a police constable, who had befriended her through Facebook, used to harass her for money and gold. This led her to take the extreme step of ending her life.

Speaking to mangalorean.com, Jyothi’s cousin said that Jyothi was the adopted daughter of Jayanthi Moolya from Kumpala and studied in a college in Someshwar. “Two days ago, Jyothi seemed disturbed and shared her problems with her friend. She said that a police named Praveen Salian was threatening and demanding Rs 1 lakh and gold, and that if she failed to fulfill his demands, he would come to her house and inform all her relatives about her character. When her friend told Jyothi to inform her mother about it, Jyothi said that she did not want to share her problems with anyone.”

Before committing suicide, Jyothi had left a death note in Kannada in which she had mentioned about her friendship with Praveen through Facebook and how he was blackmailing and threatening her for money and gold. He had also threatened of commiting suicide if she did not meet his demands. She has also mentioned in the note, “I am sorry Mummy, I do not wish to lose you and so I am taking this step.”

Jyothi’s cousin further said that the police should protect vulnerable girls. “Instead, a police is the reason for a young girl to end her life. We are afraid that Jyothi will not get any justice because the culprit himself is a policeman. I hope that the concerned authorities will do justice with Jyothi by punishing the culprit severely.
