Many of the Earth’s ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points of depletion or irreversible change, pushed by high population growth and economic development. By 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our way of life. Living well within planetary boundaries is the most promising strategy for ensuring a healthy future.

Hotel Taj Gateway-Mangaluru and Government ITI for Women-Kadri Hills, Mangaluru celebrated “World Environment Day” (WED) on 5th June 2015, 11am at ITI premises On this day, an awareness programme on the importance of sustainability and conservation of water resources, for the students of this I.T.I.through power point presentation was conducted; Slogan Competition on WED was also conducted for the students of this Institute; two saplings of Jackfruit was also planted in the ITI campus; and Initiated an undertaking from the students of this Institute for a personal challenge aimed at formulating a new habit towards creating a greener planet.

The programme began with invoking God’s blessings through a prayer song rendered by Thara of the ITI institute, followed by welcome address and introduction of the guests by Compere Lokesh of ITI- the guests on the dais were Balakrishna- Principal of ITI Institute, Vynatheya Bhagavan- Human Resources Manager-Taj Gateway, Krishnappa P- a Environmentalist, Ganesh- Superintendent at ITI, and Hanibal Soans- Security Manager, Taj Gateway. Addressing the students, Principal Balakrishna said, ” It’s nice to note that our institute partner Taj Hotel Group has come up this year with a unique project. In the past we have conducted projects like beautifying park, cleanliness drive-Swachh Bharath, and many other projects. I like to bring to your notice that you students are not keeping cleanliness in the campus-I see used chewing gum, chocolate and snacks wrappers, drink bottles etc littered every where in the campus. Effective today, you need to take a oath that you will not throw garbage in the campus. If you make up your you can do it and keep our campus clean. Let’s make our PM Modi’s dream of “Swachh Bharath” a reality with our active participation”.

Vynatheya Bhagavan stressing on “Every Drop of Water Counts” advised the students on “water conservation” through a power-point presentation. He said, “Water conservation encompasses the policies, strategies and activities to manage fresh water as a sustainable resource, to protect the water environment, and to meet current and future human demand. Population, household size and growth and affluence all affect how much water is used. Factors such as climate change will increase pressures on natural water resources especially in manufacturing and agricultural irrigation. The goals of water conservation efforts include: To ensure availability for future generations, the withdrawal of fresh water from an ecosystem should not exceed its natural replacement rate”. Various tips as to how one can conserve water was presented through this power-point presentation.

It was indeed a kind gesture of Krishnappa P- a local environmentalist, who after seeing the news in the newspaper that “WED” was being celebrated at ITI, had come to the programme with bunch of save the environment signs, and also two jack-fruit saplings to be planted in the ITI Campus. Krishnappa also recited some slogans about awareness on Environment, which was followed by planting of the two jack-fruit plants. A slogan competition on “WED” was also held for the students, and the winners in this contest will be presented with prizes during the forthcoming Taj Gateway monthly meeting.

In conclusion, it is nice to note that World Environment Day (WED) which is United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment is supported by organizations like Hotel Taj Gateway and Govt. ITI for Women. By observing WED, it will like a ‘people’s day’ for doing something positive for the environment, galvanizing individual actions into a collective power that generates an exponential positive impact on the planet. The WED theme this year is “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care” is aimed at the well-being of humanity, the environment, and the functioning of the economy, ultimately depend upon the responsible management of the planet’s natural resources.

Every Action Counts- WED is the opportunity for everyone to realize the responsibility to care for the Earth and to become agents of change. Let’s do it for the betterment of environment.
