After securing second place in the 400 m Hurdles, speaking to mangalorean.com Arpitha M said, “Even though I have many medals, I don’t have a job. I have a BA degree and I have been participating in athletics for 4 years, but in Karnataka, nobody gave me a job. I have been asking with the authorities but I have not received any response from them. It is a big problem for me since I come from a poor family. Cash awards have also been denied to athletes in the state. Athletes from Karnataka perform well, but they do not get any support. Athletes from other states receive more recognition, support and job opportunities, especially those from the northern parts of the country.”

Arpitha represented Karnataka in the Delhi Open Nationals 2014 in the 400m Hurdles category where she won a Gold medal with 58.6s and 2nd place in 400m race with 54.70s.

Abhishek Shetty from Karnataka scored a total of 6630 points to win the gold medal in the Mens Decathlon. He was followed by Raneesh V V from Gujarat with 6391 points and Suren R representing Indian Bank with 6264 points.

In the Mens 100 m Run, Amiya Kumar MA from Odisha bagged the gold medal clocking 10.56, followed very closely by Jyoti Shankar from the Army with 10.56, and Krishnakumar from Maharashtra with 10.58. While in the Womens 100 m Run, Srabani Nanda and Dutee Chand from Odisha bagged the gold and silver medals with a time of 11.59 and 11.86 respectively. M G Padmini from the Karnataka team came third to bag the bronze medal with 11.89,

The Mens Javelin Throw finals witnessed Devander Singh from the Army manage a throw of 79.65m to bag the gold and also break the previous meet record of 79.32m made by Rajinder Singh in 2014. Neeraj Chopra from Haryana and Rohit Kumar from Delhi bagged the silver and bronze medals with 73.96m and 72.72m repectively.

Another record was broken on the 2nd day, in the Mens Shot Put finals. Haryana’s Inderjit Singh broke his own previous meet record of 19.89m (2014) and came close to breaking the national record, 20.69m held by Om Prakash Singh, with a throw of 20.65m to claim the gold medal. Tejinder Singh from Punjab bagged silver with 18.08m, while Om Prakash Singh from ONGC bagged the bronze with 18.02m.

In the Mens Long Jump finals, Ankit Sharma from Haryana won the gold medal with a mark of 7.99m, Yugant Shekhar from UP won the silver medal with 7.53m and M Arshad from the Air Force won bronze with 7.38m.

The Mens 400m Hurdles winner Durgesh Kumar speaking to mangalorean.com said that Mangaluru has a very good atmosphere. “The public support is also good. I am happy with the way this championship has been organised and I’m very grateful to the organisers. My main aim is to qualify for the Asian games. My previous best was 50.60 at the Open Nationals Delhi in 2014. I am very happy to qualify. This will be the first time that I will be representing India at the senior level, I had represented in the junior level before.” Speaking on team member Rama Chandran, who came second in the same event, Durgesh said, “Rama Chandran and I, we both compete a lot, both on field and during training. Last time, during the national games in Kerala, we had close competition; there too, I came first and he came second.” Durgesh had set a target of 50.20, but made it in 50.29 followed closely by Rama Chandran with 50.35. Durgesh and Rama Chandran both belong to the Army team.

Speaking to mangalorean.com on Tintu Luka’s ( who won the gold in the 800 mtr race) performance, P T Usha said, “She is in good form, though not at peak and capable of running within 2 minutes. I had trained her with a pace runner last week. So I was expecting more from her. But since there is no timer here, it’s difficult for her to push herself. She has got entry in the Diamond League that will be held in Shanghai, China on May 17. She will be a tough competitor there.”
