Mangaluru: Minister Abhaychandra Jain Inaugurates 64th National-level Body Building Championship – 2016

Mangaluru: The 64th National-level Body Building and Fitness Championship – 2016’ was inaugurated at Nehru Maidan here on February 12.

The programme began with the State Anthem. Chairman of the 64th National-level body building and fitness championship Ivan D’Souza welcomed the gathering.

The Two-day National-level body building and fitness championship was inaugurated by Minister for Fisheries, Sports and Youth Services, K Abhaychandra Jain along with other dignitaries on the dais. The sports torch was lit by Abhaychandra Jain and U T Khader and handed over to Roshan Ferrao.

Addressing the gathering Jain said, “I am very pleased to be here to inaugurate the 64th National-level body building and fitness championship. Mangaluru has its own identity in Sports. Mangaluru has brought name and fame in Body building at the international level. Bhasker Thokkkottu, Raymond D’Souza, Roshan Ferrao have brought laurels to our country”.

He further said that last year we had organized the National level sports meet. This year we are constructing a international standard swimming pool worth Rs 5 crore in Mangaluru. There was a demand to have a turf football ground and we will do it spending 80 lakhs to 1 crore, the state government through the sports department will sanction the funds. There was demand to have Turf pitch, we have identified and reserved 9 acres of land in Kottara and in the coming days the turf pitch will be constructed. DC Ibrahim is also working hard to start the construction work.

Jain also said that, Ivan says that being a sports minister he is taking all the sports activities to Moodbidri but there is a reason to take the sports activities to Moodbidri. Dr Mohan Alva is providing free education, food and accommodation to more than 750 students in his institutions. The state government led by Siddaramaiah being inspired by the service of Dr Mohan Alva has given me a free hand to encourage sports activities in the state.

In Moodbidri we have constructed a Gym worth Rs 50 lakh, synthetic track, swimming pool and a skating track is also getting ready since more than 750 students practicing sports everyday. He congratulated the organizers and assured his support in promoting sports activities.

Minister for Health and family welfare U T Khader said that our body builders have brought laurels, they are shining in the international level and Dakshina Kannada has special recognition in body building. Raymond D’Souza has made DK to be recognized in the international level. Raymond D’Souza has inspired many youth and prepared them to compete in international levels. By organizing the 64th body building championship in Mangaluru has proved that we have good leadership in organizing national level events too. He congratulated all the organizing committee members.

Mayor Jacintha Alfred presided over the function.  DC A B Ibrahim, MUDA Chairman Ibrahim Kodijal, Chairman Sri Devi Education Trust Sadananda Shetty, Director of FMMI Patrick Rodrigues, Raymond D’Cunha and others were also present.
