Mangaluru: Hindu activists allegedly assaulted a youth by tying him to an electric pole at Babugudde, Attavar here, on August 24.
According to the police, Anwar (name changed), a 28-year-old youth from Kuloor, was going by car along with a girl of another faith. Hindu activists waylaid the car at Babbugudde, pulled him out and stripped off his clothes. Later, they tied him to the electric pole and thrashed him.
Later, the police arrived at the spot. A complaint was filed in the Pandeshwar police station. Anwar said that the girl works with him in a supermarket. Anwar has been admitted to the hospital. A case has been registered in the Pandeshwar police station.
In this connection, one person has been arrested by the police and search is on for others.
It is a case of gross violation of the civil and constitutional rights of the 2 people who were traveling in the taxi. What difference, if any, that exists now between Taliban and these religious extremists? These extremists must be sent to Pakistan or Afghanistan to get a taste of their own medicine. Shame that this is happening in a democratic country! The culprits should be punished to the full extent of the law and their case should be well publicised so that others do not carry out such attacks.

I was pointing out an old, raw, uneducated tendency in our society to assault ‘culprits’ in public before handing them over to Police for due process.
