Doha November 7, 2008: The much expected musical extravaganza 'Doha Ki Shaam Rafi Ke Naam' hosted by Tulu Koota Qatar, was a hit in the jam packed audience at Doha Cinema today.  People thronged the venue to listen to the golden greats of legendary Indian Singer Late Mohammed Rafi and fine tuned by the renowned singer hailing from Tulunadu Mr. Tagore Das.

The mega event was officially declared open with a welcome address by the president of Tulu Koota Qatar, Mr. Ravi Shetty.  This was followed by the lightening of the lamp by Mrs. Jyothi Ravi Shetty, Mrs. Pramila Divakar Poojary, Mrs. Reshma Prakash Ajila & Mrs. Veni Maroly.  The Team Co-ordinator of the 10 member troupe Mr. Ivan D'Souza gave the introduction of the artists.

"Darde Dil Darde Jigar"….Tagore opened the curtain by an emotional song of Rafi to commemorate his dedication to all his fans music lovers. The song picked from the film 'Karz' was the starter of the show. The first duet "Vaada Karle Saajna Tere bina maina rahun" from the film 'Hath Ki Safayee' gave the entry for the female singer Mrs. Anita Samson.

It was then the turn for a fast number of Rafi from the film "Farz", "Mast Baron ka mei Aashik", which seemed to be wakeup call to the young audience to leave their seats.  Tagore warmed up the audience with another love hit 'Ye Mera Prem Pathr Padkar' from the film "Sangam." The much awaited super hit song from the film "Teesri Kasam" "aaja ajaa mein hun pyaar theraa" set the pace for the rest of the evening followed by the evergreen hit of Rafi from the film "Suraj"  'baharo phool barsavo mera meheboob aya hai'.  Tagore Das, with his  timeless renditions took the audience back into memory lane.

Known to be tireless singer, he kept the crowd busy with the evergreen hits of Rafi for the first one hour show.   Classical songs of Rafi saheb  followed from the film Kohinoor "madhuban mera radhika Naachere" and "Laal chadi maiy'daan chadi" picked from the film Janwar.

The much awaited super hit Qawali 'parda hai parda hai' from Amar Akbar Antony held the packed crowd spellbound. The duet song 'ohh hasina zulfoon wali' from the film Theesi Manzil , 'aaja're aa-zara' from love in Tokyo, 'chup gaye sare' a duet from Do Raste, 'aap ke peheloo mei aakar roo diya' picked from film Mera Saya, duet song from the film Aaradhana "ghungu na rahi hai bhavar khil rahi hai kali kali' were few of the hit songs picked among 35 songs sung by Tagore in the span of four hours.

Tagore also gave surprises by singing other than Rafi tunes. He sang Talak Mehmouds super hit "itna na mujse pyaar bada ke mein yek badhal aawara" from film Chaya, Hemanth Kumars "bekaraar karke muje yun na jaye ye' from film Bhees saal baad, Mannadeys classical song "laaga chunri mei daag chupavon kaise" from Dil Hi Tho hai, were special gifts to the audience.

The show however seemed incomplete until Tagore came out with a Tulu song picked from Koti Channaya 'Khemmale tha brahmma yenkle kula dayyvo bhramma'.  This song thrilled the Tulu community as it was for the first time that Tagore had sung a Tulu song.  This was followed by two Kannada hits one from Mungaru male 'aanusithide yako' and Nagu nagutha from the film Bangarada Manushya. The hits from local languages added that special touch of musical flavor to the night.

The last session of the event Gheet Mala (Sitaron Ke Saath Rafi) was filled with humor as Tagore opted for Rafi sahebs fast and sad songs mix up.  'hum kale hain tho kyahuva dil wale hain'  (film Gumnaam) muje duniya walo sharabi na samjo from film Leader followed by fast song "Bakkamma Bakkamma Bakkamma vakade Pathora" gave the conclusive notes for the show.

The other supporting artists where Mr. Pappan of Kerala who played the organ, Mr. Joy S(Guitar), Mr. Shabir Das (Tabla), Mr. Joy(Congo-Drum), Mr. Nikhil Ram (Saxophone and Flute), composer Mr. Azeez. Well-known TV Anchors of Tulu Nadu Mr. Avinash Kamath campered the show.

Later all the artists were felicitated by Tulu Koota, compered duly by Mrs. Milan Arun, the star artist of Tulu Koota Qatar. Cultural Secretary Mrs. Sudha Shetty proposed the vote of thanks.

I was one of the spectator of the event. Being from Hindi belt, what I loved the most was the special gesture and hospitality treatment by Tulu Koota members. I was closly watching Mr. Manna who never missed any spectators to wish and smile.

I was sitting at the 1st Balcony and watched the complete event upto the end. Mr. Tagore kept us warm upto the end. His two classical songs was superb. Anitha Samson's solo song was touching. Tabla artists Mr. Shabbir was eathquake at the auditorium.
An event to be kept on my record books. I wish Tulu Koota will host many such programes in future to entertain the entire Indian Community at large.

For the ones who were not there to witness this excellent program, Mr.Iqbal Manna has done justice by covering the whole event. It is evident from the expressions of the audience from various angles he has captured on his camera that Tagore ji supported by a superb orchestra took the whole Doha Cinema by storm. For us, members of Tulu Koota Qatar celebrating our 10th anniversary under the able and dynamic leadership of Mr.Ravi Shetty, this was like a topping on the birthday cake. The memorable voice of Mohd Rafi in the form of Tagorji is still ringing in our ears and will stay there for a long long time to come…... Appreciation also goes to Anita who sang superbly and Avinash who compared with so much fervor as it added more flavor to the program. Qatar’s Tulu Bhandavas!!!!! The Party has just begun…

I wish to express the following as a spectator of the event.

Tulukoota Qatar inherent tradition of active involvement of previous office bearers of in organizing the event was exemplified once again.

In addition to entertaining the audience with the songs of Mohd Rafi, the gesture of Mr. Tagore Das by singing songs in Kannada, Tulu was really nice.

The untiring services rendered by Mr. Sridhar Nayak at Ticket Sales Counter and welcoming of event viewers by Mr. Vivian D’ Souza were impressive.

The spontaneous classical dance along sidelines of centre-stage from Mr.Mammuni with perfect synchronization to classical tunes of Md. Rafi was outstanding.

The compere of the event Mr.Avinash was very aggressive true to the tradition of RJ, while the short ceremony of facilitating the artists which was compeered by Mrs. Milan Arun was perfect with grace and charm.

Tagore's tune recalled Rafi memories in a well organized show by Tulu Koota Qatar yesterday. The show presented for 4 hours kept the crowd on toes. It was my first ever experience at Qatar a show which could be a memory for ever.

Many thanks to the President Mr. Ravi Shetty, past presidents Mr. Divakar Poojary, Mr. Prakash Ajila and of course Mr. Iqbal Manna for all their tireless efforts to stage such a wonderful show.

The hospitality treatment of Tulu Koota volunteers both male and females were excellent; which reads the discipline of such a great organization of tulu expatriates.
