Mangalore, January 17: The world Konkani cultural centre opened here today in a glittering function. Inaugurating the Centre the Goa Chief Minister Mr. Digambar Kamath said that the interstate cultural exchanges should be intensified quickly to make the cultural ties more prominent between the states that use the same language for communications and culture.
He said the state of Goa has a sentimental attachment with Karnataka particularly in matters of language and culture. This bondage should be further strengthened by inter state exchange of scholars and researchers in language and culture he called.

| Long live Konkani, the Jasmine of Aryan languages. Konkani has influence of Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit. It also has influence of local languages such as Kannada, Tulu, Malayalam. I understand there are Konkani speaking people in Bhavani districe in Tamil Nadu. Goan konkani us supposed to be origianl. However, I find it rather difficult compared to our own Konkani. Cochin konkani has lot of Malayalam influence.Let us remember those who have contribuited immensely for the development of Konkani language. Rakno and Panchkdayi are two magazines devoted to konkani.Konkani movies have not attained high standards so far.Konkani has a long way to go when it comes to literature.Without a written word, it tends to lag behind its sister languages. Similar situation for Tulu as well.Tulu had script which is lost over the centuries. It needs to be learnt again. Mangalore university should have funds available for Tulu research. Let us impress upon our politicians when they come asking for our votes this time around. University is funded by the central government and which is a better time apart from Lok Sabha elections? |
