Karthik urges youth to take UPSC exam

MANGALORE, June 3: Karthik Kashyap, a 23-year-old civil engineering graduate from here who secured the 140th rank in the Union Public Service Commission examination in his first attempt, wants teachers and parents to promote the "culture of appearing for the civil services examination" among youngsters.

Speaking at a meet-the-press programme organised by the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists’ Association here on Wednesday, Mr. Kashyap urged youngsters to appear for the examination in large numbers.

"Undivided Dakshina Kannada is being projected as the land of intellectuals, but only a few people appear for the civil services examination," he said.

Mr. Kashyap, who is the son of Mayor M. Shankar Bhat, took objection to parents grooming their children to become doctors or engineers. He said that youngsters and their parents should understand that there were opportunities beyond medicine and engineering.

He said that in States such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and in Delhi there was a culture among parents and teachers to encourage youngsters to appear for the civil services examination. Mr. Kashyap attributed his success to hard work and encouragement by his parents and brother. He has opted for the Indian Police Service (IPS).

"I have been interested in joining the police since I was in college. This profession provides ample opportunities to serve in different fields," he said.

He said that after completing his graduation from Nitte Mahalinga Adyanthaya Memorial Institute of Technology at Nitte in Udupi district, he spent one-and-half years in Delhi preparing for the examination.

"Some people discouraged me saying that it will be difficult to clear the examination because there is corruption in the UPSC. They said that only candidates who could influence the UPSC authorities could pass the examination," he said. "But these are misconceptions people have about the UPSC. It conducts the examination in a transparent manner," Mr. Kashyap added.

He said that there was no scope for any corrupt practices. "I know the son of a top UPSC official who is appearing for the examination for the third time," he said.

Mr. Kashyap said that he studied for 10 to 12 hours every day while preparing for the examination.

Dear editor/ Kashyap,

There is nothing strong than the heart of a volunteer. This Civil Exam teaches you a lot during the preparation time, only few can tell how sweet it is. I do agree with Kashyap that emphasis should be given to the rural areas & empowerment of women and none can do better than an IAS.
Thanks forbeing an isnpiration.
Thnks & Rgds

hi,
I want to Congratulate Mr karthik for his acheivement as it is not tht easy to clear UPSC with a good rank.We have always seen that only people from north indian states dominate in UPSC and Even i have completed my engg in computer science and now i have decided to take up UPSC.Is ther any way i can contact Mr karthik Kashyap so that i can take some tips from him about the studies????
Jai Deep puri, India Jun 26, 2009
Good inspirational articlle Karthik, Thanx. I have an addition to make in your opinion regarding taking exception to parents grooming their children for engineerig /Medical. We can not afford to loose sight of the benefits of having studied medicine /engineering at undergraduate level. Beyond the subject content, it is the discipline/endurance/methodology of studying in an organised/focussed way inculcated in the young /developing minds while undertaking Science Studies, that comes handy in preparing for tough exams subsequently in life - whatever may be the subjects chosen for them. You have to acknowledge it, yourself.
