Mangalore, Oct 23: "He was a smooth operator, nobody even could suspect that he was such a fiend, sex maniac and a serial killer. His modus operandi was something that the most intelligent criminals could not have imagined," says the chief investigating officer in the Mohan Kumar serial murder case ASP of Puttur Mr. Chandragupta.
All the women one by one were led to their doom, without their knowledge and done with clinical precision. Cyanide pills he procured from various sources mainly the goldsmiths of the district had been his main weapon. He did not believe in crude methods that common criminals take up like strangulation, stabbing, or even pushing from a height.
After that horrific trail of crime, Mohan Kumar is now a good prisoner. The police said they did not have to struggle to elicit information from him, he told them everything including the last detail of where he got the Cyanide from. He told them that he was suffering from a deep sense of guilt and will fully co-operate with the investigation. He has confessed to all crimes he has committed.

In one observation he has stated that he was motivated to use Cyanide as his weapon after seeing how the LTTE members used to kill themselves with Cyanide even before the Sri Lankan army could elicit any information. It was a clean killer. Having some background in Science (he was a teacher in Science) he had understood how Cyanide worked. It worked silently and quickly. All his victims were dead within 2 minutes inside the bathroom. In the case of Yashoda, she came out of the bus stand and was speaking to him when she died. But then being a smooth operator Mohan Kumar had escaped from there even without raising a suspicion.
Mysore was his favorite killing field, the ladies bath room was large and secluded as it is located in a corner of the bus stand, One of his victims had given a loud shriek before she died but nobody heard it he recounted with the police from his cell in Bantwal Rural Police station on the night of Thursday.
Mohan Kumar had married Mary Belthangady when he was a teacher in Shirady school. She had divorced him when he had refused to convert into Christianity. His second and third marriages were successful from which he had four offsprings and he was supporting these two families from the money he received from the sale of the gold jewelry he got from the bodies of his victims.
His mother Thukru who is staying with her other two sons Ramesh and Lokesh at Kanyana village says that her son had committed no crime but the women who went with him were immoral characters, she said it was natural for a man for being infidel but the ladies should have resisted. She had no answer when she was told that he killed 18 women.
The police are still riding high on their find but there was a mountain of work in front of them. They have the evidences both circumstantial and hard evidences which might get Mohan Kumar to the gallows. The Special Investigation Team(SIT) is now busy in gathering more information and evidences against him and Dr. Chandragupta is confident that his team will be able to do justice to the eighteen victims.
The key case was still that of Anitha who was murdered in Hassan bus stand. In this case there are substantial evidences and recorded mobile phone numbers which will nail Mohan Kumar.
The SIT has sent men to Bangalore, Hassan, Mysore and Madikeri for investigation already, to see if there are any more cases of un-natural deaths reported (UDR) in which the Modus operandi of Mohan Kumar was involved.

By nature males and females are born in approximately the same ratio. A
female child has more immunity than a male child. A female child can fight the germs and diseases better than the male child. For this reason, during the
pediatric age itself there are more deaths among males as compared to the
females.
During wars, there are more men killed as compared to women. More men die
due to accidents and diseases than women. The average life span of females
is more than that of males, and at any given time one finds more widows in the
world than widowers.
India is one of the few countries, along with the other neighboring countries, in which the female population is less than the male population. The reason lies in
the high rate of female infanticide in India, and the fact that more than one
million female fetuses are aborted every year in this country, after they are identified as females. If this evil practice is stopped, then India too will have more females as compared to males.
In the USA, women outnumber men by 7.8 million. New York alone has one
million more females as compared to the number of males, and of the male
population of New York one-third are gays i.e. sodomites. The U.S.A as a whole has more than twenty-five million gays. This means that these people do not wish to marry women. Great Britain has four million more females as compared to males. Germany has five million more females as compared to males. Russia has nine million more females than males. God alone knows how many million more females there are in the whole world as compared to males.
Even if every man got married to one woman, there would still be more than
thirty million females in U.S.A who would not be able to get husbands
(considering that America has twenty five million gays). There would be more
than four million females in Great Britain, 5 million females in Germany and nine million females in Russia alone who would not be able to find a husband.
Suppose my sister happens to be one of the unmarried women living in USA, or
suppose your sister happens to be one of the unmarried women in USA. The
only two options remaining for her are that she either marries a man who
already has a wife or becomes 'public property'. There is no other option. All those who are modest will opt for the first. Most women would not like to share their husband with other women. But in Islam when the situation deems it really necessary Muslim women in due faith could bear a small personal loss to prevent a greater loss of letting other Muslim
sisters becoming 'public properties'.
In Western society, it is common for a man to have mistresses and/or multiple
extra-marital affairs, in which case, the woman leads a disgraceful, unprotected life. The same society, however, cannot accept a man having more than one wife, in which women retain their honorable, dignified position in society and lead a protected life.
Thus the only two options before a woman who cannot find a husband is to
marry a married man or to become 'public property'. Islam prefers giving women the honorable position by permitting the first option and disallowing the second. There are several other reasons, why Islam has permitted limited polygyny, but it is mainly to protect the modesty of women. |

The privilege of marrying upto 4 times must have been created to give shelter to those women who must have lost husbands to war or other calamities prevalent at that time. It could be men went to war, died creating a huge disparity in sex ratio. These widowed women and their children must have found solace in having a family.
God never created 4 females to 1 male in order to justify the rule and in the current circumstances this rule is meaningless and if all other religions or laws does not allow a man to keep more than one wife then even Muslim leaders must take the courage to speak against it and abandon this practice. |

The Qur’an is the only religious book, on the face of this earth, that contains the phrase ‘marry only one’. There is no other religious book that instructs men to have only one wife. In none of the other religious scriptures, whether it be the
Vedas, the Ramayan, the Mahabharat, the Geeta, the Talmud or the Bible does
one find a restriction on the number of wives. According to these scriptures one can marry as many as one wishes. It was only later, that the Hindu priests and the Christian Church restricted the number of wives to one.
Many Hindu religious personalities, according to their scriptures, had multiple wives. King Dashrat, the father of Rama, had more than one wife. Krishna had several wives.
In earlier times, Christian men were permitted as many wives as they wished,
since the Bible puts no restriction on the number of wives. It was only a few
centuries ago that the Church restricted the number of wives to one.
Polygyny is permitted in Judaism. According to Talmudic law, Abraham had
three wives, and Solomon had hundreds of wives. The practice of polygyny
continued till Rabbi Gershom ben Yehudah (960 C.E to 1030 C.E) issued an
edict against it. The Jewish Sephardic communities living in Muslim countries
continued the practice till as late as 1950, until an Act of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel extended the ban on marrying more than one wife.
(Interesting Note:- As per the 1975 census of India Hindus are more
polygynous than Muslims. The report of the ‘Committee of The Status of
Woman in Islam’, published in 1975 mentions on page numbers 66 and 67 that
the percentage of polygamous marriages between the years 1951 and 1961
was 5.06% among the Hindus and only 4.31% among the Muslims. According
to Indian law only Muslim men are permitted to have more than one wife. It is illegal for any non-Muslim in India to have more than one wife. Despite it being illegal, Hindus have more multiple wives as compared to Muslims. Earlier, there was no restriction even on Hindu men with respect to the number of wives
allowed. It was only in 1954, when the Hindu Marriage Act was passed that it
became illegal for a Hindu to have more than one wife. At present it is the Indian Law that restricts a Hindu man from having more than one wife and not the Hindu scriptures.) |

Dear Santosh, you have taken my words wrongly. I was correcting Mr Raj's remarks and even I used to think that Muslims keep more wives but in India the statistics are opposite and I was surprised to note the statistics. I am not condemning nor siding but simply getting the facts right.
Having said this, it is a serious issue in any community irrespective of which God we believe in or do not believe in. Mr Francis Lobo has rightly pointed at the issue of Girl child. In India the ratio of male to female is 1000:930. Girls are killed at birth, abandoned at orphanages simply because they are girls, molested, raped, abused and killed giving rise to demographic imbalance and subsequently the crimes that follow. |

Severe punishment must be given to this person and should be a lesson for such heinous crimes.
Public should voice their concern against such culprits with the highest authorities so that quick action is taken at the earliest and not after five years. |

| In the whole episode we are missing the one issue of Girl child and marriage of them. The menace of dowry and the difficult getting them married at right age. The poverty which is prevalent in the lower strata of the society is common cause for this. Rather than finding a suitable match, these girls have married a unknown person even without the knowledge of parents. The issue is a serious one than the issue of murder. Similar was the issues in the case of Mahanand Naik the Goa serial killer. In both cases the perpetrator was married and was living with his family. But still killed innocent girls for the financial /personal pleasure. The government/NGO's should try to solve these issues, rather than doing a postmortem of this case. Police can only help after the incident and law of our land is teeth less, so unless proved no one can be convicted. |

| Raj, although I do not want to take sides here I wish to correct you that even though technically Islam allows Muslims to keep 4 wives in reality it is Hindus who practice polygamy in India despite being illegal as per Indian laws. This is a fact and it was reported in all leading newspapers in India recently and it is a misconception that Muslims keep more wives. Muslims do keep more wives but only in rich Arabic countries. |
