Hummer- Big time boy comes to M'lore

By Rajat R. - Team Mangalorean - Mangalore

MANGALORE, November 29, 2009: It is a dream of all big boys around the world, those who own Harley Davidsons, those who drive Macks and Caterpillars to own a Hummer, but alas, only few can feel its power Humming under their palms when they turn on the engines.

Yes we are talking about the Hummer, that has become a legend in its own times. This beast of a vehicle has made crores of head turn around not just in live conditions but also in mere pictures on those auto magazines. One such vehicle has come to Mangalore, this black beauty perches in the portico of Dr. Prasad Panikkar at Kadri Kambla. This legend of its own times is the first Hummer to be brought home by a Mangalorean from the United Arab Emirates.

Hummer has three variants - Humvee which is supplied only to the US Army, Hummer 2 (H2) is the civilian variant which has two models and the last one is the high end model which is fully loaded and the last among this variant is the one with Schwarzenegger kit - if you have already guessed it, yes its Arnold Schwarzenegger the true action hero of the Hollywood. There is only one fully loaded Hummer in India which runs in the roads of Delhi and none of the Hummer enthusiasts are able to conjure up a Hummer with Schwarzenegger kit considering it costs a whopping Rs. 3.5 crores.

Speaking to Mangalorean.com Dr. Prasad said he was fascinated by the power of Hummer. "This Hummer has a monster of engine churning out 6600 BHP (Most powerful automobile in India -A Volvo B7R passenger bus has only 4500 BHP). This is delivered by a V-8 engine which only Range Rover has in its class," he said. V engines are fitted in only muscle cars. In India only Hindustan Contessa had a scaled down V -6 engine.

Dr. Prasad is in the business of airport development, Seaport development, infrastructure and many other businesses that take him places. He has a passion for large and fast cars. In his stable are the following cars -- Range Rover, Lexus -3 in number, BMW X5 SUV, Mercedes S class and Porsche HTS  and many other cars of whom which he has lost count.

"The Hummer I have now has a full satellite driven navigation and GPS. The special one star connection which can open up any hospital in the world by giving an alarm via satellite when this button is pressed, and the alarm will go to the nearest hospital to the vehicle," he explains to the group of journalists who visited him. "The Hummer can cruise at a speed of 120 miles per hour effortlessly and if need be it could attain a speed of 200 miles per hour, but unfortunately India does not have a highway that can take that speed. Considering the state of highways in Shirady Ghat and Mangalore Udupi stretch the Hummer was the right choice" says Dr. Prasad. The Hummer takes any rough road smoothly.

"It needs only so much effort as to drive a small car" says Dr. Prasad. The gear shift and steering is super smooth and the shocks are so responsive that no pot hole can slow it down.  It gives just 2 kilometers for one litre of petrol and costs Rs. 25 per kilometer. With a full tank of 120 litres capacity it can go as far as Chennarayapatna on the road to Bangalore from Mangalore.

The house of Dr. Prasad in Kadri Kambla has become a pilgrimage centre for the auto enthusiasts as people belonging to all age groups are making that trip to caste their eyes on the legend that is Hummer!

Kudpi is right. Nikhil Gowda has one already! He is also famous for his love towards 'chicken biryaani'!! smiles...

'Appanige takka maga' is what comes to my mind when I see Gowda family. Recently, we were driving near 'mudipu' area (not too far from Konaje University) and our driver pointed at a huge property and house owned by actress Radhika. Apparently, "kumaranna" is a regular visitor to this remote village.

i think its first hummer in karnataka

If I am not wrong, our ex-CM Kumaranna's son had or has one, though it may or may not be officially in his name.

Congratulations to the proud owner of this rugged vehicle Dr. Prasad. There may be thousands of people yearning to own it (or a similar vehicle - just like buying a dream house). This is indeed a great achievement because only a few people can think of owning and maintaining it. A hummer moving around on the roads of Mangalore is an achievement and a feather not only in Dr. Prasad's cap but in fellow Mangloreans too. Not a word has been mentioned about the pretty lady (Ms. Janet) standing next to Dr. Prasad that has enhanced the look of the vehicle. I'm proud to note that she is from Bendur Parish a place I grew up and still holds a special place in my mind and heart till date. Thanks Rajat R. - Team Mangalorean - for the lovely pics and for this article.

Correction - This Hummer has a monster of engine churning out 6600 BHP (Most powerful automobile in India -A Volvo B7R passenger bus has only 4500 BHP)."

It is the cubic capacity of the engine, not the power. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thank you,
Rajat

First of all, It is a matter to be proud of that Mangalore has been introduced with a Hummer H2 which was never seen in Mangalore city before. Dr. Panikkar has taken all the trouble to get the vehicle landed in Mangalore so that Mangalore can boast about the well known Hummer.

Secondly, about the registration. It is a matter of fact that I have personally seen Dr. Prasad Panikkar's License and found a list of countries in which he could import the vehicle to and drive legally.

Thirdly, This vehicle is known for its comfort even in bad roads (most suitable for Mangalore roads cause there are potholes almost everywhere). Sitting inside this vehicle feels as though you are riding on a block of butter sliding down a hot pan. This vehicle hardly gives any vibration or shakes when one is driving over bumpy and uneasy surfaces. Speed is not the thing to look for in a Hummer, its the ease of driving and comfort in all terrain that matters.

As said by Mr. Thomas, if one drives a Ferrari on Mangalorean roads, he would have had it. Firstly there would be scraped under-belly, broken bumpers, damaged transmission etc etc.

Dr. Panikkar had a dream, his dream was to own a Hummer. After all, its personal choice. He dreamt of it and worked till he was able to achieve his dream. Now he is living it proudly. So i suggest we all respect his determination instead of criticizing his choice of vehicle. He has done his best to show Mangalore a piece of modern engineering. The maneuverability of this vehicle is simply mind blowing, Dr. Panikkar drives it like an alto in the streets. And the facilities this vehicle has is something which can not be matched by any modern vehicles. I can say, this is a humble vehicle for the worthy.

A better title would be "Conspicuous consumption comes to Mangalore."
Kudpi Rajanikanth Shenoy, India Dec 1, 2009
International registration is a load of trash. There is no such thing. There of course is International driver's licence which will allow you to drive in another country. That again is possible when you show it to the authorities who will isuue a licence based on the Int licence.- Shen maam's expert opinion.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shen maam, Mr. Panikkar has also said in the news item in TOI about authorities stopping him on road, and after he produced the International as well as India Motor Driving Licence, they let him go.

Regarding re-registration of vehicle in India, I don't know much about it. I don't know, if Mr. Panikkar has done that or his International Registration has been approved by the RTO.

Rajat, where are you? I am having a tough time answering queries on your article yaar! :D
Kudpi Rajanikanth Shenoy, India Dec 1, 2009
Hemanth, India and Guru, India, thanks for your valid info on the subject. Let's wait and watch what our RTO has to say on this!

I still feel at loss, not being able to see that monster as yet! :D
jagadeesh , India Dec 1, 2009
Its wonderful......! It rocks ..
Prasad finally made it.
congratulation and heartily welcome new Hummer to karnataka.

wish you all the best to prasad and family.
Hemanth, India Dec 1, 2009
Kudpi Maam,
If the vehicle is brought from U.A.E legally, it should have carried "Export" number plate, not U.A.E number plate. It is a normal practice of any country, to issue Export number plate, when the vehicle being exported from that country to another country.
Thomas D'souza, Kuwait Dec 1, 2009
This article should have been
rightly named: BIG BOYS' TOY COMES TO MANGALORE

Well, in a modest upcoming city like Mangalore or Udupi in a conservative state as Karnataka, this is big time news to see a HUMMER for a change instead of the big old Ambassador.

All mechanical statistics, which many readers have pointed out as being incorrect, are not justified. Who needs power and speed, in a poor State like ours - Moreover, most people walk even today, and where there are no proper roads or footpaths provided, and where one cannot better a speed limit of 30Km./Hour.

For true power under the hood, sheer speed, and real dynamics in looks one should settle for a Ferrari and drive on good broad roads, that are available in India but not viable.

Whatever inspired Dr. Prasad to import his vehicle all the way from Dubai and having perhaps to toe the Indian customs duty of 200% - I would personally think it is madness.

Mangalore is the wrong choice of city to showcase a HUMMER - which is an absolete car in the USA and as well in GCC countries. It's simply a gas guzzling square shaped monster, poor in comparison to a HUMVEE.

Truly speaking, only an Ambassador is built to withstand our Karnataka roads, and not even a HUMMER can compare in loading handling and load handling!
A.S.Mathew, USA Nov 30, 2009
He has money to blow, so let him enjoy this monster. It will give the pleasure of extreme power and the joy of riding in a fully loaded truck. For the Indian roads, if he is driving this vehicle, it is a very critical driving, but if it is for a display in front of the house, then a great vehicle.
shaukath ali , riyadh, Saudi Arabia Nov 30, 2009
first of all congrats mr, prasad for owning a giant suv. but i think its not worthy, if u look at suv like RANGE ROVER SPORT, HONDA PILOT, LINKOLN NAVIGATOR, LEXUS LX570, all suv much better than a HUMMER. according to performance hummer is nothing. and maintainence, ofcourse hard to afford. and its not too luxury as others.
Kudpi Rajanikanth Shenoy, India Nov 30, 2009
Guys,

What apprehensions I got to observe here from the readers are mainly the fuel consumption and the registration of the vehicle in Mangalore.

Mr. Panikkar has taken care of both the issues, I am sure.

I read the article in TOI today, in which Mr. Panikkar has clearly stated that he has paid International registration fee in Dubai as well as he is holding International Driving License and the vehicle has Dubai registration plate thus.

Local Police have interrogated him for lack of info on their part, and he has given due reply to them. Now they are also convinced, I am sure.

Now about the capacity of the engine, I am not an authority to say anything, I am not an expert on advanced power charged vehicles. Googling may help you guys.

Mr. N Shetty's last sentence is totally uncalled for, as Mr. Panikkar has openly exhibited the vehicle to public!

I guess, our reporters should take care to present news items with more details, rather than getting carried away with the romance of admiring the features of these rare vehicles! :D

I have not seen the vehicle as yet, I shall see if I could take some enthusiast on my Yamaha RX100 and zoom to Mr. Panikkar's place to see the Monster! Rajat may help me in this, I am sure! :D
Stanley D Souza, , USA Nov 30, 2009
Congratulations Dr.Panikkar and good luck with your Hummer. If we could use it to explore some oil rigs in Mangalore to run many more of them it would be a wonderful investment. It is a pride of USA. Have fun and have a wonderful trip around Mangalore city which is widening the roads right now. You have hit the right chord to bring the Humvee to the city. I am excited to see the pictures..good luck again.
N Shetty, USA Nov 30, 2009
Though I am not fan of hummer or any expensive vechiles, but in this case I totally support his passion
Hummer H3 cost $65k in US, he paid well around 2-3 crores (not sure)..that big chunk would have gone to Customs, middle man..or something.. He is putting some money to the Indian government..
Also he not putting the money for destruction like terrorism or illegal alcohol...

This Hummer has a monster of engine churning out 6600 BHP (Most powerful automobile in India -A Volvo B7R passenger bus has only 4500 BHP). This is delivered by a V-8 engine which only Range Rover has in its class,"--- did u really check out abt SUV's. Hummer H2 is just looks big. Suzuki swift can beat hummer easily its top speed is just 153 km/h. check out Range Rover supercharged, Porsche cayenne (which is already in Indian market), landcruiser, VW toureg (which also comes with V12 engine and Audi Q7 (V8 engine).
KL, India Nov 30, 2009
Hummer had a 6.0L 325 hp (242 kW) V8 (2003-07) and the present one is a 6.2L 393 hp (293 kW) V8 (2008-present). There are many other vehicles which compete with the Hummer and Hummer is not the only one with a V8. To name a few competitors we have the Nissan Armada, Toyota Sequoia, Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Tahoe and the list goes on. From the pictures I can see that the vehicle is a left hand driven vehicle. It is against the motor vehicle act to drive left hand driven vehicles in India. It still hold a UAE number plate and wonder how the RTA of Mangalore is allowing it to be driven in the City.
BSB, India Nov 30, 2009
"This Hummer has a monster of engine churning out 6600 BHP (Most powerful automobile in India -A Volvo B7R passenger bus has only 4500 BHP). "

Have you checked the facts on this Dr Prasad/ Mr Rajat? Hummer H2 has a VORTEC 6000 engine (a 6L V8) and power is 325 HP @ 5200 RPM.

Further, as Shen maam pointed out, is the LHD vehicle street legal in India? Also wondering if the pilgrimage centre in Kadri Kambla houses other dieties of auto enthusiasts mentioned in the article - Range Rover, Lexus, X5, Porsche :)
Anil, India Nov 30, 2009
Congrats Dr. Prasad for being the proud owner of the Hummer H2. We can say proudly with our friends in other places that our Mangalore has a brand new hummer.
Puttur Dinesh, USA Nov 30, 2009
I think Dr Panikkar could have invested money into stock market and made more money than buying the gas guzzler, but he can take it to exibhitions and charge money for showing it.

its an impractical suv in economic or transport sense especially for India. By the way GM is planning to sell it to chinese company.
John Max, USA Nov 30, 2009
Hummer is a losing brand in the US. After gas prices went high, its just a waste of money now.

It was sold to some Chinese company early this year. Oh Hummer! How great have you fallen!
Gopinath K, India Nov 30, 2009
'It gives just 2 kilometers for one litre of petrol and costs Rs. 25 per kilometer."

White elephant!
BSB , Iceland Nov 30, 2009
Congrats Dr Panikkar for getting the baap of four wheelers to Mangalore! It is indeed an entusiast's dream come true.

@Kudpimaam.... It is never too late to realize ones' dreams.. Harley Davidson's India operations have been launched a few months back and they are holding roadshows in Metros. Expected launch of motorcycles is early next year. Btw there is one Harley on Mangalore roads - have you seen it? It looks AWESOME!
Sudhir, USA Nov 30, 2009
Worst rated SUV in the US. Gas guzzler and unattractive look, fit for only Army. Dr Prasad, get rid of this vehicle before it brings you down to your undies, this one sucks petrol and money. Good luck.
Original R.Pai, USA Nov 29, 2009
"2 kilometers for one litre of petrol...."

Well, It's Dr. Prasad's money. He has the right to do whatever he wants. Personally, I would be embarrassed to drive this gas guzzler on the streets. Imagine, someone driving a tank on the streets - I'm sure tank has much more power than Hummer!

Again - no offense to anyone who loves these big, expensive toys. I hardly find these things fascinating!

PS: Dear Kudpi - Glad to know your love towards to Harley davidson. I live in a city that makes Harley Davidson. (I'm sure that Google will help you find the place! smiles...) Who knows? When you visit US, you can stop by here so I can take you for a tour of Harley fecility.
Austin Prabhu, USA Nov 29, 2009
Raj, as the gas prices started skyrocketing, manufacturing of this monster machine has been stopped now. People have become money conscious in the US! They go for cars with more mileage per their dollars. Dr. Prasad can preserve this monster for many years to come.
Kudpi Rajanikanth Shenoy, India Nov 29, 2009
There was a time when I saw the first Harley Davidson bike on road in my life in Bangalore, cruising past as I was riding my humble Rajdoot 175cc bike. Harley Davidson bikes were mostly used by NYPD, otherwise seen in Hollywood movies like 'Easy Rider' and 'Hell's Angels on Wheels'.

I fell in love with the machine and brooded over the dream throughout my younger days, hoping to own one!

Now the dream is over, and I still run my 23 year old Yamaha RX 100 which is faithful to me.

Dreamers should make their dreams come true at the age. Later, the machine is fast, while the owner becomes thing of the past!

Congrats to Panikkar family for owning the monster.
