Gulbarga March 8: Though the international women’s day was marred by protests in Delhi, for Sunanda Rajaram, a grassroots level BJP leader, it was truly a special day, for she was today elected Mayor of Gulbarga city Corporation in Karnataka.
Hailing from a very modest family, Sunanda, a grassroots level BJP leader, was once a tea vendor in the city. But her determination to serve society and to bring a marked change in this city made her the second woman to head the corporation.
Once, Sunanda used to run a small tea stall at Mohan Lodge centre and earn hardly Rs one hundred per day. Her election came in the wake of the saffron party weaning away many cooperators from the Congress and some independents to install the first BJP Mayor.
Despite BJP having only 19 votes in the House, Sunanda secured 25 votes to emerge victorious. The outgoing Mayor Saida Begam, however, did not turn up for elections due to ill health. Once the BJP win became evident other Congress cooperaters ''boycotted'' the election. Congress party sources said as many as ten corporators rebelled and joined hands with the BJP. Senior Congress leaders, Union Minister M Mallikharjun Kharge and former Chief Minister Dharam Singh made efforts to reconciling them but in vain.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA and Former minister Qumar Ul Islam alleged that the BJP lured corporaters from other parties by offering huge sums of money while carrying out the ''Operation Lotus' to win the mayor election. This was undemocratic, he alleged.

Lawrence, US:
BJP always aceepted people from all religions. Problem with people is you need more than 'acceptance'. You need special attention. For this special treatment, you go to Congress. The age old egositic members of this party will stoop down to any level provided you satisfy their ego. |

Soman, why can't BJP accept minorities and Daliths on par with them? Don't you know all human beings are created equal? Does anyone care about the supremacy of so called upped class in this 21st century?
When multi-national companies mushroomed and brought unprecedented prosperity to India, the age old Swadeshi Mantra has died a natural death. Now the Daliths and minorities are coming up in the political field, the Hindutva will die the same death in due course. |

Dear Rakesh,india,
Please mention your full name/ real name.Normally catholics in mangalore will be have three names. First name is generally indian name.
Everyone will agree Congress has always promoted nehru family. An Italian lady( Rajiv gandhi's wife) who doesnot know about indian history neither indian culture was suddenly made congress supremo..Just go back to those days. Congress party could not solve their internal politics, but as soons as sonia became their lead these jokers became silent. Shame on congress party. My many thanks for Dr. A.P.J kalam for stopping her in becoming indian prime minister. For eg: Manmohan singh who looks so weak and is always accompanied by the same italian lady in many occasion. M K gandhi said congress should be dissolved after independence. So please stop supporting congress. |

| In gulbarga tea vendors, rickshaw pullers, panwallahs are becoming mayors not because they have something to contribute but because the corporations can be controlled by MLA's of the area using these people. congress MLA qumar ul islam did this for a very long time, fed up of this a faction came outfrom congress and supported BJP and BJP MLA Adarsh gowda propped up this Tea vendor...the faction for a long time was fighting to become mayor...it has nothing to do with women empowerment, the previous mayor was also a woman syeeda akhtar. |

| Mr. Soman of Oman, what Mr. Alfred Rebello of UAE said is correct. BJP is just doing what Congress is doing. BJP coming to power in Centre should not happen and it will be dream and a disaster if they come. Mr. Soman, why you are feeling the PINCH ? Tathagata Mukherjee you are crazy to call Modi the famous CM of Gujarat. He is a Murderer and killer of many innocent lives and everyone knows this. Gandhiji praised RSS before for the good works RSS did. But now if Gandhi would have been alive, he would have BANNED RSS. So you also learn things before shooting on your feet and before advising Alfred of UAE. |

| Though I may not agree with the way BJP, managed to get their candidate elected, my main grouse is against Congress which practically at every drop of word says it reprsents woman and down trodden, but when it comes to implement it looks the other way. If congress had supported this lady without any condition probably people would have appreciated their action for the honesty and accepatance of reality. It would have given a big boost in their next elctroal battle |

| Whether the Women's Bill succeeds in Parlament or not, what matters is the determination of women to rise up in society. Women contribution to Indian democracy is thought not new, every time we hear a lady making a breakthrough it is time to applaud. So here are our best wishes to this honourable lady. |

This shows that those grass-root workers in BJP can be the top-brass as well. L K Advani too has a similar story where he stormed to the top from grass-root. We have not heard of any Advani in the top-brass in 60s and 70s and 80s (during JS times) and we will not hear for another century or so. But we have heard of Gandhi in 60s and are hearing it even now. Now we also hear of Scindhia, Pilot, Diexit and these are not the first generation but second generation.
People should themselves understand this. |

Alfred J. Rebello,
Do you know Narendra Modi, the famous CM of Gujarat, was also a tea vendor?
BJP is the party of masses and people here can rise based on their ability unlike Congress where its dynasty.
Hindutva is casteless. Even Gandhiji praised RSS for their casteless approach when he visited RSS offices many times.
Please read, learn things before shooting on the feet! |

| Thoughy I am happy for this woman, I am of the opinion that BJP has no choice but to oblige such things because Congress is trying to uplift common man including Dalits and BJP has to follow the same to survive. BJP's true colour will come out only when they rule India on its own. We are already experiencing in Karnataka. Has BJP ever done such things in the past? I am confident that BJP smelled their downfall in the next state elections and they want to please Dalits just to get back to power and if they do, then they show their true colours later. Whatever you say, BJP should not come to power in the Centre on their own and if they do, it will be a disaster, not only to those who are recognised as minorities but also others. There will be civil disturbance all over India, which I hope, no Indian prefers. BJP's main mentality is Hindutva and that also upper class. For me, no country belongs to any religion but people. Yes, there could be some belivers in majority of a particular faith. When I said Congress, the current and not the past. |
