Tragic Plane crash in Mangalore shocks the nation

Updated: 12 noon

Mangalore, May 22, 2010: The Bajpe Airport will be open for normal but selective operations at 1 o’clock in the noon today.  AI is sending a relief aircraft from Mumbai which will take the passengers bound for the Mangalore-Abu Dhabi-Muscat flight.  As we mentioned earlier, the flight that crashed was supposed to resume its journey from Mangalore to Muscat via Abu Dhabi.

Air India has said that it feels deep grief for the people who have been killed in the accident. The Air India officials have announced a compensation of Rs.2 Lacks for the families of the people who have succumbed in the accident and a sum of Rs.50,000 will be given to the injured people.

Dr. Vir Singh, the COO of the Kasturbha Medial College in Mangalore said "We have one survivor who has an injured knee and spine fracture who has now been treated and shifted to the ward already. While two others were brought dead, completely charred."

IX812 had fuelled fully at the Dubai airport as is customary.  The flight went up in flames immediately due to the massive load of fuel in it.

The fire was so dense that the smoke has risen upto nearly 2 kilometers in the sky. According to one local, they can see nothing but smoke everywhere. He said that it was suffocating there and compliments the rescue workers for their brave attempt to rescue the people.

Flight captained by Serbian National

The aircraft is said to be 5 years old.  It was manned by Captain Glusica Vlatko, 55yrs olds, a Serbian National and co-piloted by Alhuwalia, an Indian National.  The Captain had attempted to land the plane on the middle of the runway but overshot it by 300 meters. After this he tried to take off again but the left wing of the plane hit a pole and the plane went out of control. The plane landed one kilometer far from the runway after crashing into a village, caught fire and exploded.

Captain Venko Dikovski, a close friend and colleague of late captain Glusica, spoke to mangalorean.com from Dubai and said that Glusica was an experienced and proficient pilot who had many flying hours to his credit.  Captain Dikovski elaborated "He was a good captain. We flew together for Yogoslavia Airlines. Mangalore has a very tricky runway to land. Pilots have to be very precise while approaching IXE because of its terrain and runway length and also because most of the time aircraft lands there with maximum landing weight. Though computors assist to approach, Pilots skills are needed for safe landing and stopping of the aircraft. I have worked fr 3 yrs for AI Express and landed many times in IXE. It is the worst airport to land among airports which I so far landed on." Capt. Zoran Ivancevic another colleague of Capt. Glusica said "We passed out from the same aviation acadamy in 1975 and he was flying commercial Jets since 1979. He was a very skilled pilot. He was a very responsible and kind person. This is an tragedy and when tragedy strikes nothing is normal, everything goes wrong." When asked to comment on pilot errors in general, Captain Dikovski said "Fatigue among pilots is the main cause for any pilots errors. Indian authorities change the regulations and the airlines change the pilots flying schedule very often. They made it legal for the pilots to fly 125 block hours. The pilot commitee had protested against it but nothing good happened. Two months back a Turkish airline crashed near Amsterdam in the morning due to pilot fatigue. Few weeks back Emirates Boeing 777 flew into CB (Stromy clouds) because pilots were too tired and they didn't notice the weather."

A "Tragic" Funeral

A group of 20 people were flying in that flight to attend a funeral in Mangalore and none of them have survived. The Wenlock hospital is filled with dead bodies and the bodies are being returned back from the hospital due to lack of space. One family was flying from Dubai to attend a wedding, the family members being Nazeema (39), Zulekha (51), Mrs. Mehzaan (22) and her infant (7 months old).

Most bodies charred beyond recognition

Most victims of the Air India Express crash near here Saturday were charred beyond recognition, with the front portion of the plane completely burnt, rescue workers said.

Flight IX 812 was scheduled to land at Bajpe airport, about 30 km from here, around 6.00 a.m. in cloudy weather and a drizzle.  There was utter confusion at the airport as no one could initially make out what happened, an airport official said.

"There was thick smoke. Soon we saw the flames," the official said. Air India authorities said there was no distress signal from the pilots when they were landing or after the plane touched the runway.

Since the plane fell into a gorge, it took some time for airport workers, police and the fire service to reach the place.

Air India Express from Dubai crashes at Mangalore Airport

Update 9:40 am

BAJPE (MANGALORE AIRPORT) May 21, 2010: The information is a little sketchy as the flames have not been doused yet. As per the local officials, it would take not less than an hour or two to put out the flames.

There were said to be 22 children out of the 169 passengers in the ill-fated flight. The 6 survivors were immediately rushed to the nearest hospital. The nearest hospital about 15 kilometers away and it took nearly 20 minutes to reach the hospital. About 25 Ambulances have been arranged to take the injured people to the hospital. The fire officials are trying their best to put out the fire. Moreover the villagers are helping the fire and rescue officials in any way that they can.

The IGP Dr. Gopal Hosur said "It would take atleast an hour to put out the one mile high smoke that which has been the result of the crash."

The incident happened at about 6.30 AM. It is said that the pilot never gave an SOS to any of the ground offices in the Mangalore airport. The Mangalore airport is in fact a complex terrain as it sits on a hillock. The table-top terrain, the forests and poor visibility might have added to the tragedy. And as per the Home minister of India 60 people are confirmed dead.

Mr. Subramanyeshwar Rao, the SP of Mangalore said that the rescue operations are at its best.

The DGCA has set up a control room at the Bajpe airport.  The airport has been closed temporarily and all incoming and outgoing flights have been cancelled.

A total of 160 passengers are feared dead.  Rescue operations are being hampered by the rains and the difficult terrain surrounding the airport premises.

The CM of Karnataka Mr. Yeddyurappa is on his way to Bajpe and has assured of all government assistance.  A grim looking Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa told reporters about three hours after the disaster that the Boeing 737 was carrying more than 160 people and "survivors were unlikely".

"Except for five or six people who were rescued, we fear the rest of the passengers (and crew) may not have survived." he told reporters in Bangalore, the state capital, before leaving for the crash site. "It is a grave tragedy."

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condoled the loss of lives in the air crash at the Mangalore airport Saturday and ordered Rs.200,000 for the families of the dead and Rs.50,000 for the injured.

He also postponed an event scheduled at his official residence Saturday evening to celebrate his government's one year in office during its second tenure.

Air India has officially expressed its regret over the tragedy and has confirmed that it is making all efforts to confirming the identities of those who have lost their lives in this tragedy.

The airport is temporarily shut down for air traffic. For further information please contact the Air India helpline center in Delhi

Previous updates

Air India Express flight coming from Dubai today crashed near Mangalore airport while coming in for landing from Dubai into Mangalore on Saturday May 22. It had 169 people including 163 passengers and six crew members aboard and according to an estimation over 100 are feared dead.

Following the mishap the airport has been closed according to the airport authorities. According to preliminary reports the plane had developed a technical snag. Later one of its two engines caught fire and the plane burnt in the air before crashing down.  This happened at 6 am. The flight had left Dubai international airport at around 1.10am (Dubai time).

IX812 came from Dubai into Mangalore in the early hours of the morning today and had another flight schedule for the day that of Mangalore – Abu Dhabi – Muscat.

Airport officials at the Dubai Airport confirmed that 5 passengers did a ‘no show’ which means they did not report for embarkation from Dubai.  There were 22 children on board out of which 4 were infants.  The rest were all adults.

There is an abject pall of grief hanging over the Bajpe airport premises.  People who had come to visit their loved ones are shocked and grief stricken and unable to come to terms with the tragedy.  Meanwhile, the rescue work is going on in full steam at the tarmac.

First of all, I would like to pay my most humble respects to all those who had died in this tragic accident. My prayers and thoughts are with the families who had lost their dear ones.

Next, Regarding air accidents, these do happen even with most experienced ones. Experience do not save pilots from accidents. What saves pilots from accidents are "Following procedures" and "Not being complacent".

In this situation, the pilot in command had been a very experienced one but what he did not care about was his approach to a landing. His final approach segment was definitely faulty and he did not follow the proper missed approach procedure.

However, may God bless all of their souls and rest them in heaven.

first of all my deepest condolence to all the family who have lost thier dearest one. even we realy feel bad and sorrow to here that our brothers and sister have lost thier life

Its high time now people has to react, its really sad that pilot has to land the plane within fixed runway as our corrupt system, politician unable to built airport to internation standard. simple question why cant we built a enogh length run way.

One more example our mangalore - udupi highway still not complete after working for more then 3 to 4 years, this is all because of our corrupt system and politican. because of this there is lot of accident happening in the highway.

please brothers and sisters in mangalore be united, dont fight due to different religion, work together to throw out anti national people from our city. this will be our true tribute to people who lost thier life due to this horrible crash.

Raju India,

Its not the time to talk like with cheap mentality, but to act with one hand as a single community without differenciating with religion. In fact, this is only the reason, why we are still to develop. I believe the people talk such a language at this moment, are not human beings.

Its really a DARKEST DAY for we, Kannadigas.

May The Almighty rest the soul in peace and let Him give the strength of tolernace to the families of diseased.

It’s very sad news and a black day for all of us. Heart felt condolences and May Almighty God bless the souls of the deceased & give courage & strength to the family of the bereaving!

Certainly it’s very scary while landing in Mangalore Airport. We have experience in our every visit and everyone knows about this problem but not much done. A fancy name is kept to the Airport/runway “TABLE TOP” Why not just a runway like other’s?

Instead of investing on the luxury terminal the money would have been used to lengthen the Runway. Today morning in the news (CNN IBN) Mr. Krishnan, Aviation expert commented that the request to add 500 sq ft was declined by the authority as it required additional 70 crores and thereby restricted to 8500 sq ft in 2005. Not to blame anyone but additional 500 sq ft would have made the difference. But its GOD FATE at least this tragedy should be an eye opener and GOVERNMENT should take the initiative to change so called scary “TABLE TOP” to normal RUNWAY.

No words to explain the grief and anguish arising from this tragedy. Irrepairable loss. Cannot blame anyone but fate. Reminds me of previous tough & dangerous landings and turbulence in the past, several diversions to Bangalore in monsoons and so on.

RADIO SPICE 105.4 FM Dubai and our entire team deeply mourn the loss of so many lives of passengers and the crew members of ill- fated Air India express flight IX-812 travelling from Dubai to Mangalore.

It’s a very sad, shocking day for all of us and most unfortunate incident.

We are struck with grief and our hearts bleed for those who have lost their dear and near ones. Our hearts are filled with sorrow and we do not find words to express our grief.

Our heartfelt sympathies to all those families & friends who have lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident.

May the souls of those killed rest in peace. We prey to the Almighty GOD to give strength and courage to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident, to bear the un-repairable loss.

We also prey to the Almighty God for the few survivors and injured a very speedy recovery and return to their normal living.

Our humble request to all, is to kindly prey for the departed souls and sympathize with their families, instead of blaming everyone in the world and becoming overnight experts in aviation. Ifs, buts’ and blame game would add more hurt and grief to the families. Most definitely all can join collectively to demand corrective measures with the concerned authorities once this most difficult period for the families is over.

Mangalore is in news again for wrong reason.

This should't have happend if the pilot was agile while landing. Every pilot who lands here knows the death valley down the run way. they should be 'double careful' while landing and take off here. Call it lack of confidence or over confidence this mis calculation caused his life and of other 159 people.

It is a tragic event in the lives of Mangaloreans. My heart goes out for the families of those who perished. Many a dream has been shattered. Life will not be the same for all these people. Future travellers through that air port will travel with a little anxiety in their minds. I agree with Mr Shenoy that some misjudgement apart from any technical issue might have caused this. Obviously the pilot misjudged and overshot and failed to take off again. I am sure technical minds and Engineers will know better. I wonder what is the fate of survivors. [Spinal cord injuries etc] I think this is a serious set back for developing air traffic to Mangalore. We Mangaloreans may not have a choice but outsiders may avoid Mangalore. Calicut will likely develop further. I am also concerned that International air lines who might have thought of starting direct services to Mangalore may have second thoughts now.

I still remember how the late T A Pai had unsuccessfully tried to impress upon the central government in 1975 for establishing an international air port near Padubidri. That failed, thanks to the politics of those days. That would have given a good air port to Mangalore.

One more outcome for some time to come is that many people will avoid air travel from Mangalore at least for some time. Mangalore to Bangalore is the route that will lose passengers for sure. People may take volvo buses and trains.

One last thought. How safe are the air crafts owned by Air India Express and Air India/IA?
Danny Emmanuel Noronha-Bajpe-, India May 22, 2010
I had been to the spot. There was no problem with pilots. They had good record of flying hours. The aircarft had none technical errors and in top condition. Problem is that of runway too small for Landing. It should have at least 3000 meters extra runway for safe handling. Runway too small. There was bit cloudy but visibility was clean enough. The pilot safely Landed but at the end point he did not get enough space to stop. This is the real story.
Anand Dsilva, UAE May 22, 2010
Couple of years back, when AI express started direct flights there were jokes that the plane may fall off the valley given the dangerous terrain on which the airport was situated.

Similar incidents of planes that overshot runways in other airports were fortunate to come to a halt due to extended areas or even slush. Unfortunately in this case there is no scope as there is a steep valley and no much thought was given to it hoping all the pilots will make landing at the right place.

It is such a unfortunate incident and perhaps avoidable had we given thought to shift the airport to a more level place than to extend the runway on a hill.

Darkest day in the history of Mangalore.

Shocking and sad news indeed. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members of the victims.

Bajpe Airport's old runway was dangerous but Boeing 737s were landing and taking off without any major mishaps. The new runway is fit even for Airbus A320s. I guess it was a technical snag in the aircraft that caused the accident. Whatever, it is tragic.

I must congratulate the 8 survivors who miraculously escaped being charred to death. It is their presence of mind that saved them while most of the passengers might have been subject to shock due to the impact of the crash.

Dear All
Instead of venting our anger & sending condolences at this forum,we Muslims,Hindus & Christians should join hands and shouldn't allow AAI officials to land any aircraft until the Bajpe runway is extended further 1000ft to achieve international standards. This incident should be a lesson for people of mangalore that be it BJP at state or Congress at centre doesn't cares for the people.Wake up Mangaloreans and live the true Mangalorean culture of brotherhood.

Indeed a very shocking news. Most of the people from gulf take this flight to reach M'lore. The return flight is mostly full of students. Now we have lost trust over Indian Airlines / Air India and seriously thinking of opting of better airlines. We really have a concern if these budgeted airlines maintain their safety check and measures! My heartfelt condolence all those who have lost their beloved ones.

Very sad day for Mangaloreans. This is the first time a tragedy of such a magnitude has taken place in Mangalore. Words would be inadequate to convey the sense of loss and grief. May God bring solace to the suffering and bereaved; and grant eternal rest to the departed.

This is shocking tragedy to specially mangaloreans. it will take months or year to come out from this sorrow. My condolescence to the family of demised passengers.

Ref. technical snags. Mangalore airport runway is not like any airport in the world. the airport and runway situate atop a hill. three sides is pit deep down about 200 - 300 feet and only arrival terminal is level connected to Bajpe city. Landing the aircraft needs special skill .

it is only 25% of the chance that aircraft will remian in runway if any Any accident takes palce.75% chances it will fell into to pit. Authorities know very well about this fact.

Once TA pai propsosed Congress gvot. to shift airport to level land at padubidre.

Whoever has designed this unsafe table top design for the airport with no margin of error on the runway should be taken to task.

Mangalore has a very unsafe airport with 0 margin or error which will always invite tragic incidents like this.

I told this to my wife when I was there 4 months back, and here I am reading the news of this tragedy after 4 months.

Mangaloreans should take their elected officials to task for giving them this disaster of an airport. I guess they have made money in the real estate on the way to the airport and are now on to cooking up some other project to fill their pockets.

Now we will have an eyewash of an investigation where they will put the blame on the pilot!

I am really sad for the families of those who met their end in this tragic incident. May god give them the strength to bear this grief.

THis is a setback for Mangalore to acheive its International airport status.
This is one of the darkest days of Mangalores History . We never have had such a disaster in Mangalore were so many lifes were lost.
In death every one is Equal.
I happened to speak to My friend Dr Sunil Jathanna at the site itself who is the PHC medical officer. He explained how bad the bodies were charred beyond recognition.
Please lets all pray for each of the departed soul. Can you all imagine whats passing through the hearts of all the families who were expecting their near adn dearones waitign at the gallery (which is unique To Mangalore airport) share a thought for them.
It sure is going to give us jitters next time we fly into Mangalore.

It comes as a total shock to hear of this tragedy, a disaster of immense proportions ever faced by Mangalore in its entire history. Our prayers go to the bereaved families, the aged parents of the passengers who perished in the crash and the innocent children flying home for their holidays. Words do not describe the feelings to comfort those who have lost their near & dear ones. However, now is not the time to start witch hunting on the runway failure or the airport officials for that can be left later.

It is a joke that all big ministers are coming down to mangalore where by putting aditional pressure on district administration and more over taking off the essential force to escort these politician who are of no use at the seene rather nuisance...It is realy admirable if they co ordinate the task from where ever they are located and leave the local administration here in mangalore to manage the disaster.

Namaskara.

Heartfelt condolences to the relatives of dead in this tragedy.
Yesterday only I was talking over phone to my friend, Mr. Raghuram Prabhu who had come to Mangalore from USA on holidays that this runway should have been made "from South to North" [instead of the present West to East, on the top of the hill with no chance to fo beyond the present length as it is on a hillock] to get the full length that is realmquired for M'lore to become a real Int'l airport. I felt today morning that my 6th sense proved right this time again.

Two weeks back only, my family had traveleld from Dubai to Mangalore when 2 out of the 3 baggages did not arrive at M'lore; When I contacted from Kazakhstan, I was told by AI Exp officials over phone that it might not have not loaded at Dubai due to "pay load restriction", but they had no idea where the baggages were even after 6 hours of taking off from Dubai. Finally it came after 2 days as 2 baggages had gone to Calicut as it was not taken out at Mangalore by negligent AI Express staff! What I mean to say is that there is no proper information flow in the Govt. airlines network in this internet era. My complaint in this regard to AI Express Customer Care Execitive is still unanswered ! This is the height of callous attitude !

Even in this case, the plane had taken off at 2:30 am Indian time and now after 8 hours, there is no PASSENGER MANIFEST LIST given to media by AI Express, what a gross mismanagement? God only save this Govt airline with huge losses.

It si high time that this Manglaore -Dubai route is made open to Pvt airlines like Jet, KIngfisher, Air Arabia, etc [I like this Sharjah based Air Arabia for its punctuality & professionalism, although they don't serve free food on board].
This accident has put a dark spot on this Managlore airport & hence Emirates Airlines may never operate for next few years even if it is opened for them.

Shocking news for all Mangaloreans. But really shocked with the attitude of the all leading national news channels asking with their correspondents whether Mangalore has got any good hospitals to handle? When they could show so much about the pub attack and portrayed how developed was Mangalore, wouldnt they have basic knowledge that Mangalore has got few of the best hospitals???. then comes the political angle with Sonia condemning the incident and calling off the UPA-2yrs dinner party. Its ridiculous of these politicians waiting to take political mileage of innocent lives. We would appreciate cancelling celebrations but don't merge it as an headlines news along with the crash news.
Nisar Ahmed Quereshi, Oman May 22, 2010
This is very sad moment for all indian that we have lossed our citizens in plan crash Incident. Many of them were working abroad and after a long time they are coming to their land to see their friends and family. May God sustain help and strength to all of them who lost their loved ones...

A few days back Mr Praful Patel inaugrated the Airport and it was mentioned that if the runway was extended by 1000 ft it will get international status. Today's unfortunate incident main reason is that the plane overshot the runway and if anyone is responsible then it is the AAI officials. The Karnataka govt has got lots of wealth to harass minorities but nothing to spend on airport. Mera bharat mahan.
