Teesta criticises Catholics’ accord with Hindu groups

| MANGALORE Sept 21: Human Rights activist Teesta Setalvad criticised sections of the Catholic order, led by the Bishop of Mangalore, for entering into a “compromising” agreement with Hindutva groups in the aftermath of the attacks on churches in the region.
Ms. Setalvad said: “There can be no peace without justice. Throughout the history, sections from the victim community have been co-opted by the oppressor.” She termed as “opportunistic” and “lacking in character” the concessions made by the Catholic leadership in which they had purportedly agreed to climb down on certain issues in exchange for peace offered from the Hindutva groups. Presenting the Gujarat example she said that in the several years that the activists such as herself had been fighting for justice, several victims of the post-Godhra incident had turned hostile towards the activists. “The common refrain of the victims is that they do not want any more trouble after what they have already gone through. But that is what the oppressor wants. Violence and intimidation leads to fear which leads to submission,” she said.
Reacting to the recent spate of attacks on Churches and prayer halls in Dakshina Kannada she alleged that the police had been neutralised by some forces. “There have been no all-round transfers of police officials in the district for over 15 years. The police, therefore, act partisan,” she said.
She said that she was going to press for strict action against Inspectors Jayanth Shetty and M.K. Ganapathy, who allegedly used excessive force in their attempts to quell the retaliatory violence from Christian community on Sunday and Monday. She alleged that the events that were happening over the last few weeks were an indication of the partisan attitude of the district administration as it was under duress from the Bharatiya Janata Party government in the State.

| Teesta, in my humble view is a charlatan, who is out to compound miseries in this Country at the behest of her invisible bosses. I just saw her in a debate in the Big fight (NDTV).One percieved her intelligence as very negligible and she together with one other woman from Tehelka (I have heard somepeople tell me that Tehelka do not come out with a "sting" but with a "stink") were shouting on top of their voice with zero contribution, other than their known prejudices on the matter. |

If the Church has made an agreement with a fasist group then I do condemn the Church for it.
There should be no deals with a saffron crappy organisation that is dividing the country on the basis of religion, caste and creed.
The VHP, the Bajrang Dal and the RSS should be isolated and potrayed as a terrorist organisation.
Have they not done their bit in transforming Indian citizens into terrorists throught the demolation of the Babri Masjid etc. |

Vivekanand, May be Jayanth Shetty was good only till last Sunday. He behaved like Bhajrang agent, may be to please Acharya. Ganapathy gets high on beating. People of Mangalore know about it. May be both due for promotion shortly. It is high time such heartless individuals (you can not call them law protectors) are suspended for long time and should be made to repent for their acts.
In the name of law and order they could beat women and nuns? That too entering inside the church?
Had it happened inside the temple what would have been your reaction? |

Teesta, 2 days back Delhi police has encountered some terrorists in Delhi...please go there and check, may be it is a fake encounter in your view. Pls along with the Parliament accused and your colleague (professor) file the case against the Delhi police.
One of loyal SI also died during the incident, but you don't worry about his family or his death. Pls defend on your dearest people. |

Whatever the mangalore catholics done is the right step. Please understand that the so called Hindutva groups do not represent the views of majority of Hindus and hence a understanding between Hindus and catholics is the right step towards unity and keep away these sangh elements which is in arms against the secular fabric of this country.
I go one step further. Let us make the unified group, Hindus protecting churches and mosque and minorities protecting temples. Let us see what these Bajrang hooligans do then. They are shame for Hindu culture and the society as whole. |

Mr.Vivekananda,
I was appalled to read your credentials to Inspector Jayanth Shetty during Ullal communal clash two years ago. If you are claiming that Mr Jayanth shetty single handedly controlled the voilence, you need not say anything more about Mr. Shetty. Let me educate you a bit in this respect, the Ullal police (I am not sure whether Jayanth was incharge) under the order from Nagaraj Shetty, completely terrified Ullal Muslims. They made it a point that they broke window panes of each and every Muslim house in certain localities. I am not quoting this from some paper reports, I myself have visited more than 60 houses and witnessed the police brutality in Ullal. If the same police officer is in charge of the current carnage, he should be given a bravery award. Mr. Vivekananda, can you please recommend his name for the award? |

| She is absolutely right. Bishop compromised with the terrorist for his own interest sidelining other Christian groups and sects. Even he decleared that we do not have any sort of connection with them. This is utterly foolish statement. This will give the green signal to these terror outfits to attack them without any fear. Even Mrs. Margaret Alva, criticized Bishop's move. This is what Sanga Parivar want, pressuring to surrender...If you think properly, for a long run this is put you in more trouble. |

| I totally agree with ms Setalvad. Peace cannot be errected on the tomb of injustice. History and human character are testimony to the fact that if the perpetrators of such inhuman acts are allowed to go scotfree, they will be emblodened to repeat the attacks. Why not let the lay people at the forefront of any peace-making efforts. What makes the hierarchy think they know the sentiments of women and nuns, brutally beaten by the police. The lay Catholics should be consulted in all decision making that alters or effects their lives in any way! Church is no more autocratic.... |

| Who is this Teesta to decide whether the accord is right or wrong. It will be decided by the local people and not by some unemployed rights activists, unemployed politicians and unemployed film actors! |

Indian women are braver than men. Indeed the Bishop has made a huge mistake trying to work out a compromise with the lumpen elements of Sangh Parivar. He needs to be criticized for it. I am a Catholic and an ardent one. What the bishop is trying to do by sharing a dias with these rogues is really an insult to us. Could he not find any decent Hindu leader other than these hoodlums. Do Hindus really accept these terrorists to be their leaders? Its like saying Bin Laden is the leader of muslims.
Congrats Teesta for calling a spade a spade. |

One fine morning suddenly these human rights activists appear in front of the public as to show that they are deeply concerned to the deceased. Why they are not aware that such an organization “new life” formed and brain washing people to convert. Acting like blind until it reaches extreme and suddenly turns sympathetic.
Dear Teesta, if you have strength travel through out India, specially visit those converted areas of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and prepare the report how many are converted and how they are converted? Then spread such an education which will help the public to lead a peaceful life with tolerance.
Can you do this?!!!!!!!!!! |

| What Teesta says is right. We Christians are equal citizens of this country. We are peace loving and patriotic and love our country as any one else. Therefore we do not have to cringe and beg for peace, for it was not us who started this. Additionally all minorities should have been included in the peace meeting and not just Catholics. We cannot betray the other minorities by selling ourselves. We do not have to make a compromise and buy peace. It is the duty of the state to provide us security and it is not a gift given to us. It is the fundamental right of each and every citizen irrespective of his caste, creed or faith. |

| Can this self styled paper tiger human rights activist define what is "excessive force" used by police?. We Mangaloreans know Mr.Jayanth Shetty as a police better than this publicity hungry activist. He is one of the finest police officers who has dared to eliminate rowdy elements in this underworld controlled coastal belt a decade ago. Who has also served as member of Peace Keeping Force under UN. An upright police officer who single controlled the worst communal violence last year in Ullal. Pls. be responsible before making statements on such officers. Dont demoralise them just for the sake of being a darling of the media. If you have proof, pls.prosecute him before the Human Rights Court which has been constituted under the Protection of Human Rights Act. If there is violation of human rights proceed against all erring people including Mr.Jananth Shetty. Pls. leave Mangaloreans to live in peace. |

There is no Honor among thieves- the Jeffry archer novel. Did we do the right thing by this accord do you think they will honor it?
In the long run we need something better than the acdords.
Real resolution only comes when such groups are banned( BD). systematic hate campaign is stopped. Local kannada media is unbiased or atleast not acting against secular ideals.
Yeddy's refusal to ban BD and company seems like a blessing to these hate mongers!!
We dont need mosale kanneru!! |

"She said that she was going to press for strict action against Inspectors Jayanth Shetty and M.K. Ganapathy..." - the report quoting Human Rights activist Teesta Setalvad.
Strict action against the police officers?
I would have thought that the HR activist needed to demand the immediate dismissal of the Home Minister of Karnataka to save the Karnataka Government from further disgrace.
What makes you think the Home Minister of Karnataka did not instruct both the militias and the police to literally break the bones of Catholics in Mangalore?
I am fairly confident that the Home Minister passed such instructions to avenge the closing of the schools by the Catholic system as a silent protest a few days earlier against the Orissa aggression by the same militias. Hope you remember that the militias (obviously at the behest of the Government machinery) warned the Catholic system about closing the schools. Did not a band of guttersnipes raise banners and stood next to St Aloysius?
So the systematic planning was very evident.
Police are mere footsoldiers of the politicians. I am convinced the Karnataka Home Minister needs to be dismissed without further ado. If not, the Karnataka business will suffer with all the potential international outrage.
Peace may have returned to Mangalore (and this is important). But the Governments and the international labour unions around the world need to become aware of the atrocities committed by the Home Minister using his militias at destroying the Catholics by entering into the churches and ruthlessly baton-charging praying women and children.
I cannot imagine how the police could do such a thing unless the Home Minister instructed them to do so. |

As always so called Human Rights activist Teesta Setalvad never fails to surprise people. If some people carried out surprise attacks at places, no she is upset why the ''retaliatory violence' was not fully allowed to take its toll by the police. Is it to show that those who would have suffered in this violence would be some what different and as such would not have any 'Human Rights'.
One wonders to laugh or to cry at such comments on from such great 'humans'. |
