Oman: The Mangalorean community of St Anthony’s Church, Sohar celebrated the feast of the Nativity of Mother Mary on 10th September 2015.
The celebrations commenced with a rosary at 7:35 pm at the grotto of Mother Mary. Following this, there was a procession before the mass from the grotto to the church.
Many Mangalorean families dressed in their finest attended the much awaited Konkani mass that started at 8:30 pm. The Konkani choir sung beautiful hymns led by Franky Monis.
Fr Augustine explained the role of Mother Mary and stressed the importance of praying to her. After the mass, Noven (blessed corn) was distributed to all the faithful. This was followed by a small social function in the parish hall.
The function began by a welcome speech given by Richard D’Souza, President of the Mangalorean Catholic community of Sohar (MCCS). Then mementos were distributed to 10th and 12th pass students of the Mangalorean community for their academic excellence. There was also the distribution of medals and awards to players of the cricket match that had been played between Mangalorean Challengers and Udupi Gataghars. The medals were handed over by Fr Augustine.
Some melodious Konkani songs were sung by Lancy and Marina Goveas, Darryl and Veena Fernandes, Avin, Delain and others.
Finally, Fr Augustine blessed the dinner prepared in traditional Mangalorean style. Everybody enjoyed the special vegetarian food served on banana leaves. The function came to an end with the customary Laudate sung by all those present.
