Ramakrishna Mission holds 7th Shramadan of 40 Weeks Swacchata Abhiyan

Mangaluru: The 7th week’s drive of Ramakrishna Mission Swachata Abhiyan was flagged off on 17th December 2017 at 7:30 am by Dr Rajendra Prasad & NRI Ullas Hiremath in front of Cascia High school at Marnamikatta area. Swami Ekagamyanandaji, Convener of Swacchata Abhiyan, Harish Achar, University Syndicate member, Sathyanarayana K V & others were present during the occasion.

Cleanliness Drive: A little more than 100 volunteers were divided into 4 groups and work was divided. Shivakumar, CA led the group of volunteers in cleaning the area in front of Cascia high school & Mangaladevi car street. They removed the plastic, paper & other dirt on the road. Rathna Alva led a group of volunteers in the door to door campaign creating awareness about garbage segregation and cleanliness by distributing awareness handbills.

Public Utility Work: The area in front of Cascia high school meant to be used as footpath was neglected and had become garbage disposal spot. Children and pedestrians were not able to use the area and were facing lot of hygiene problem due to this menace. Conveners of Swacchata Abhiyan, Dilraj Alva, Umanath Kotekar & Dinesh Karkera visited nearby houses in the last 2 weeks and urged them not to throw garbage in that area and help in keeping the area clean. Work had also begun to lay interlock tiles for the footpath in that region which got over today and has been put to use much to the relief of pedestrians and children. The electric transformer in the middle of the footpath was a hurdle to many pedestrians resulting in small accidents. Hence a new railing has been erected around the transformer. Thanks to the hard work of the volunteers, garbage disposal area is today beaming with a small garden with flower pots beautifying the locality of the Cascia school.

Removal of Posters: Nearly 40 youths were divided into three teams and they removed thousands of illegal posters, banners, buntings and other publicity materials that were ruining the beauty of the city in different parts for nearly 2 hours. Shishir Amin, Souraj, Sathish Moodigere led each team and the work was taken up in Valencia, Kankanady, Balmatta, Bendoorwell, St. Agnes, Kadri, Kadri Park, Nanthur, Hampankatta, Kodialbail, M G Road, Lady Hill Road and other main roads.

These guys are doing god’s job. No words to express how much we appreciate unconditional love and commitment shown by these folks. I have two simple requests:
1. The arrangement of plants in pots are aesthetically pleasing. However, it may cause danger to drivers obstructing their way. May be, you can move by a foot and put them on the edge of footpath?
2. I still don’t see any participation from minority groups, institutions and communities. I wish they had a broad mind to join these folks or arrange their own activities to make our city a better place.
