Set up NIA office in Mangaluru, Shobha writes to Rajnath

Bengaluru: BJP state general secretary and MP Shobha Karandlaje has written to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to take steps to open an office of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Mangaluru.

Addressing reporters here on Tuesday, Shobha said the move will help in monitoring the movement of suspected jihadi elements in the coastal belt, including Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada district.

She said several police officers have confided to her on condition of anonymity that jihadi elements are moving into Mangaluru through the neighbouring Kasargod in Kerala.

She said the situation in Dakshina Kannada continues to be tense and volatile. As many as 23 activists belonging to the BJP, the RSS and other Hindu outfits have been killed during recent years. “There is fear and anxiety among the people. It looks like Mangaluru and surrounding places are sitting on a power keg.” She sought that the perpetrators of the crime be identified and arrested and, this could be done by the NIA.

Shobha also demanded that Ministers B Ramanath Rai and U T Khader be dropped from the State Cabinet for making ‘provocative’ speeches.

She said Rai had dared her to contest the Assembly polls from Dakshina Kannada district. “There are still 10 months left for the elections. The party leadership will decide from where I should contest.”
