Student Nurses get Self-defence Techniques from Karthik
Students of Fr Muller College of Nursing got ‘Self-defence Techniques’ from six times National and 16 times State winner in Martial Arts demonstrations, Martial Arts Guru Karthik S Kateel, whose basic punch-line is “Self-defense starts in Mind and Ends in Hand”. Karthik was assisted by his mom, Shobhalatha Kateel-she follows him wherever he demonstrates the self-defence techniques.
Mangaluru: Under Graduate and Post Graduate students of Fr Muller College of Nursing who take care of patients, also need to take care/protect themselves in time of sexual harassment/rape/kidnapping/atrocity etc-keeping this in mind the ‘Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee’ of Fr Muller Hospital organized “Self-defence on Sexual Harassment” on Wednesday, 29 June 2016 at Academy Hall, Fr Muller Institutions. Team Mangalorean which was there and covered Karthik’s First ‘Self-defence Techniques’ at Besant Women’s College couple of years ago, and had also covered many other events later, is once again here to cover Karthik’s 304th Self-defence programme. Till now Karthik has trained nearly 80,000 students through live demonstrations at 303 schools/colleges in DK/Mangaluru and Karnataka State, and nearly 3 lakh people indirectly.
Have you ever felt frightened or intimidated when out walking alone? Have you ever wondered what you should do if approached by an attacker? Have you ever worried about becoming yet another home invasion statistic? The sad reality is that we live in an increasingly violent society in which the fear of crime is ever-present. Personal safety has become an issue of importance for everyone, but especially for women. Concerned about this state of affairs, Karthik S Kateel has been teaching self-defence techniques and safety seminars for the last couple of years. The demand the young women saw for reliable safety information, coupled with the need to debunk widespread myths regarding self-defense measures, has convinced him to conduct more such training programmes, and www.mangalorean.com is proud to be associated with Karthik S Kateel in his projects aimed for a good cause, especially for the safety of women.
Self-defence on Sexual Harassment at Fr Muller today, or Karthik who calls it as ” Swaraksha for Women” was indeed a fun session mixed with serious self-defence techniques demonstrated by Karthik which would help girls/women during time of attack, rape and such kind of acts on them- and these useful techniques were very much welcomed by the girls, who opted and promised to use them only during the time of attacks by strangers, and not use them on their brothers or male relatives/friends?. Karthik also demonstrated some martial arts stunts which were wowed by the whole gathering. The whole gang of damsels/girls showed some keen enthusiasm and interest throughout the program. Few from the audience even posed some queries at him, and he answered them appropriately.
Many women worry that they will anger the attacker and get hurt worse if they defend themselves, but statistics clearly show that your odds of survival are far greater if you do fight back. Aim for the eyes first, next the nose, the neck, and then the groin . Remember, though, to use the element of surprise to your advantage strike quickly, and mean business. You may only get one chance. Having shown five basic techniques to survive in the hands of an attacker, Karthik entertained the bevy of young crowd with his unique martial arts stunts which received loud applauds and even called for encores. Everyone enjoyed the nearly two-hour informative session, and many wanted Karthik to come back and show them more self-defense techniques in future. Some nursing students even requested for his business card, so that they could get more information from him on self-defence.
Before getting into details of self-defence techniques, Karthik advised the young crowd about “Awareness”. He said, “Your first line of defence should be Awareness. Most people think of kicks to the groin and blocking punches when they hear the term self-defence. However, true self-defence begins long before any actual physical contact. The first, and probably most important, component in self-defence is awareness: awareness of yourself, your surroundings, and your potential attacker’s likely strategies”. He also instructed the nursing students about Safety in cyberspace/facebook/WhatsApp. Although the Internet is educational and entertaining, it can also be full of danger if one isn’t careful, especially when you download your image on FaceBook. When communicating on-line, use a nickname and always keep personal information such as home address and phone number confidential. Instruct family members to do the same. Keep current on security issues, frauds, viruses, etc. by periodically referring to tips found on Internet Safety Page.
Karthik also said “Some of the steps that women can prevent themselves from attack are: Avoid dangerous places; Don’t be a good target; Be aware of your surroundings; maintain a safe distance; Escape when you feel threatened; De-escalate verbal conflicts; and secure yourself. And if you can’t carry pepper spray or don’t have it with you, these self-defence techniques that you learned today will be able to save you. He also urged the young ladies in the audience not to stay out late at night, avoid late night parties, avoid going alone in the dark. In general, there are several crimes that women are most at risk of. They are rape, purse/jewellery snatching, stalking, threats, domestic violence, and crimes against family dispute. With each type of crime, women need to realise that they don’t have to give up and surrender to it or endure it. Prevention is commonly the best measure. Still, women have to realise that prevention is not 100 percent effective and, thus, if worse comes to worse, then defending themselves is the best and final resource.
Prior to the self-defense techniques, the program began with invoking God’ s blessings rendered through a prayer song by 4th year Nursing students, followed by welcome address by Seema Charan- Chairperson of ‘Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee’ (ASHC). The vote of thanks was delivered by Loma Pinto – secretary, ASHC and the programme was professionally compered by Frenita D’Souza. Sr Winnifred D’Souza- Principal of Fr Muller College of Nursing also graced the occasion.
With a large number of atrocities on women like rape, harassment, kidnapping, assault, etc etc, taking place in the society these days, this program of self-defence techniques served as a important source to the young women present, so that they could defend themselves during times of attack, rape or any such type of atrocities/harassment’s. It was a very useful session where all the girl students liked it and promised to use those techniques when trouble arises and save themselves from the attacker.
