134 MPs perform yoga in Parliament premises

New Delhi: Led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, 134 MPs performed yoga on the premises of Parliament on the occasion of International Yoga Day on Friday.

The Members of Parliament were joined by officers of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Secretariat and other dignitaries in performing yoga early this morning in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

On the occasion, Birla highlighted the role yoga plays in the holistic development of the nation and its citizens.

He expressed hope that yoga would emerge as a mass movement and make India healthy and energetic.

Later, addressing the media, the newly-elected Speaker said the rights of members of the Lok Sabha would be protected under the prescribed rules and procedures.

He noted that India is the largest democracy of the world and 91 crore people, including 44 crore women, have reposed their faith in democracy by enthusiastically coming out to vote in even harsh weather conditions.

“We have to work for a democratic system in the true spirit of the Constitution, rising up to the hopes and aspirations of the people towards whom we all are committed,” the Speaker said.

Emphasizing transparency and accountability in democracy, Birla said the protection of the dignity of the Parliament is the pre-requisite of a parliamentary system.

He said the first-time members would be given sufficient opportunity to express their views on the floor of the House.

He underlined that the media has an important role to play in a parliamentary system and urged the media persons to report on purposeful debates and discussions for which the members work hard.

This, he said, would further motivate the members and enhance the dignity of the House.
