Rio de Janeiro, Nov 29 (IANS) Flamengo have sacked manager Oswaldo de Oliveira with just two matches remaining in Brazil’s Serie A season, the Rio de Janeiro club has said.

Oliveira, who joined the club for a second spell as coach in August, was told of the decision during a meeting with the Rubro-negro hierarchy on Saturday, Xinhua reported.

“Today we decided to go our separate ways,” Flamengo said in a statement on their official website.

“He [Oliveira] is a great professional. We thank him for his hard work and dedication during our time together.”

The 64-year-old led Flamengo to eight wins, three draws and seven losses after taking over the role from Cristovao Borges.

Jayme de Almeida, a long-time Flamengo assistant manager and former head coach, will take charge of the team for the final two matches of the season.

Former Sao Paulo, Palmeiras, Fluminense and Santos manager Muricy Ramalho is expected to assume the vacant position after club elections next month.

Flamengo are currently 11th in Brazil’s Serie A standings with 49 points from 36 matches.
