Udupi: Devotees at the historical Sri Muchlukodu Subrahmanya Temple which comes under the Pejawar Math on Thursday performed ‘Ede Snana,’ a modified version of the centuries-old tradition of ‘Made Made Snana.’ As many as 10 – 15  devotees  participated in the “Ede Snana” ritual.

‘Made Made Snana’ drew severe criticism from intellectuals, revolutionary organisations, Swamijis and other members of the society who opposed the practice of devotees rolling over the plantain leaves containing the leftovers of devotees belonging to the upper caste. Even as the issue reached the court, the ritual was followed amid criticism and confusion.

Sri Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Pejawar Math had suggested “Ede Snana” as an alternative to the “Made Made Snana” ritual. It is for the Third successive year that the “Ede Snana” was held at this temple.

Ede snana is a modified version of Made Made snana (a ritual of rolling over food eaten by Upper class) which has been stayed by the Supreme Court. Under “Made Snana,” the devotees roll over the plantain leaves containing leftovers of meals partaken by Brahmins. But under “Ede Snana,” devotees roll over the “prasada” or “food offered to the deity” kept on plantain leaves.

There is no scientific evidence that rolling over the left overs will cure skin diseases or any kind of diseases. The idiotic practice probably started hundreds of years ago by Brahmins to show their superiority and to exploit the poor and illiterates by preaching that such rollover will cure their diseases. If Brahmins believe that theory, I suggest that Brahmims should rollover the leftovers of Dalits or so called lower caste to cure their diseases. Anyway, the practice is against the decency and self esteem of a human being. Hopefully, the growing educated people in India will realize the truth… Read more »

“There is no scientific evidence that …” screams ‘brahmana dhweshi’ Sas

Is there a scientific evidence behind God? Do you think Brahmana people invented ‘god’ thousands of years ago to exploit poor and illiterates? Just trying to understand the nature and depth of your selective outrage.

The first thing that always came to my mind was – Why do these brahmana’s take extra food knowing fully well they cannot eat that much? Why couldn’t they have just left the remaining food in the pot, and invited all the hungry for a feast, and this would have made perfect sense. First food is wasted, and what is worse is to see a fellow human being degraded by encouraging him to roll in those left overs with a hope that this would cure them of their “Skin diseases” ???? This is the 21st century and still people practise… Read more »

Dear readers, These days, Indian policymakers are debating how to create a vast new food entitlement program. There is talk of poor households struggling to cope with high food prices and malnourishment among their children. What you don’t hear much about, however, is the most tragic and outrageous consequence of India’s failure to feed its people adequately: starvation deaths. India is a nation that prides itself on having been self-sufficient in food production for decades and having leaped forward economically over the past 20 years. So it isn’t surprising that public officials and even many in the media are reluctant… Read more »
