Puttur: Dengue (pronounced DENgee) fever is a painful, debilitating mosquito-borne disease. An estimated 390 million dengue infections occur worldwide each year, with about 96 million resulting in illness. The Indian subcontinent, being in a tropical area, runs the greatest risk of being prone to it.

A large number of cases of dengue have been reported in the DK district during the recent months and some deaths have taken place already. The latest victim is a 29-year-old resident of Dolpadi in Puttur taluk.

Lohit, son of retired teacher Janaradana Gowda, had complained of high fever about 15 days ago. He was admitted to a private hospital in Puttur. After 12 days of stay, the fever subsided and he was taken home.

The very next day, fever and severe pain in the legs bothered him. He was taken to a hospital in Kaniyoor and examined. As advised by the doctors, he was taken to the Puttur hospital. But since the condition worsened, he was admitted to the KMC hospital in Mangaluru at a late stage.

The situation did not improve and he succumbed to the illness on Wednesday. Over the days, the fever is said to have affected his head and brain, according to family sources.
