30 Check Posts Functioning to Stop Cattle Theft in Udupi District – SP Nisha James
Udupi: Superintendent of Police Udupi District Nisha James has said that the department would strictly monitor illegal trafficking of cattle in the district.
She was speaking to media persons during her weekly phone-in programme at the SP office on Friday, July 12.
A total of 30 check posts during the night time and 10 check posts during the day are functioning at crucial junctions to trace the cattle traffickers. The police team has already nabbed some culprits in some of the theft cases.
Elaborating over the measures taken, she said that in 2017, seven cases were reported and 14 cattle were stolen. In 2018, 11 cases were registered and 20 cattle were lifted and in 2019, till date, five cases have been registered and 11 cattle were stolen, she
said.
The SP said police are also registering suo motu cases. In 2017, 26 cases were registered and 68 were arrested and 41 cattle were rescued. In 2018, 31 cases were reported and 47 were arrested and 73 cattle were rescued. In 2019, till date, 14 cases were reported and 31 were arrested and 57 cattle were rescued. The charges will be filed under CrPC 107 and 110 as part of preventive action.
The local authorities were asked to be part of preventive measures and ensure that the cattle were safely transported to Goshalas.
Speaking about traffic violations in the district SP Nisha James said, “We have conducted a special drive during the last two weeks against carrying people in goods vehicles and overloading in school vehicles. We have booked 100 cases in this regard against the goods vehicles and also sent a proposal to the RTO to suspend the license of those violating the rules”, she said.
The Auto Drivers and Omini drivers carrying school children should also follow the guidelines of the Supreme Court. The SC guidelines also include: yellow painted buses; display of ‘On school duty’ on the front and back of the bus; carrying children according to the permitted seating capacity of the vehicle if they’re above 12 years old and 1.5 times more if below 12 years; first aid box; drivers with minimum of five years driving experience and GPS fitted to vehicles.
The government notification with regard to violation of traffic rules is already implemented. Heavy fines will be imposed on those violating the traffic rules. The fine for traffic rules violators has been increased, those using mobile phones while driving, parking in no-parking places and over speeding will face a penalty up to Rs 1000, she said.
special drive will be launched against vehicles parking in ‘no-parking zones’, disfigured silencers of motorbikes making a lot of noise and vehicles without insurance. The special drive, being conducted is not only to reprimand the violators but also to create awareness.
