30 Minute Rain Floods Road in Heart of the City
Mangaluru: This year, the people of DK have experienced a severe shortage of water and were dependent on water being supplied through water tankers through the summer.
MCC has done its best to provide water to the citizens of Mangaluru during the crisis. Now, due to rains since the past few days in some places in the district, the water in the Thumbay dam has slowly increased and has been recorded at 10.10 ft as of May 31.
On May 31, at around 10.20 pm, there was heavy rainfall for about 30 minutes. Just 30 minutes of rain flooded the Balmatta – Jyothi road, disrupting the free movement of traffic. More than 100 meters of the road was filled with water, with the adjacent Jyothi government school compound also being flooded. The road planning and other concerned officials have failed to foresee such problems which has become a common trend that the people of the city face.
Speaking to mangalorean.com, Farooq, who was riding a two-wheeler, said that it is very dangerous to ride in the water. “There was a heavy short circuit near the Jyothi school gate. We requested pedestrians not to use that road since it is dangerous due to the electric current,” he said.
Another person, Kumar pondered that if this is the situation in just half an hour of rain, what would happen in the coming days? “MCC engineers did not take any measures for the rain water to flow freely. There are no proper rainwater drains, so the water is flowing on the roads.”
If the MCC does not take any measures about this, there will be floods everywhere in the city creating problems for school going children and the elderly. The concerned authorities in the MCC should take immediate steps to avoid such situations.
This happens every year. Where are the elected reps? Oh never mind – they are not from BJP. So, let’s ignore it and blame it all on MCC.
Slight showers in Mangalore lasting for few hours must have flooded the place. Its strange that uncertainty in rain can cause so many havocs in our daily life where the normal monsoons are a “must” for all practical purposes including the farming activity, water supply stability and much more. Hopefully God will hear our prayers and that the Monsoon season will help us to carry on with our normal life in and around Mangalore.
The Mangalore Municipality should work on building a proper
and working drainage system on the Balmatta and other main
Roads, and as well clean and maintain existing drains at all the time,
especially before the start of monsoons – there will be no flooding then!
Its the poor quality management by our so called people in power. I still remember the case wherein our illiterate politicians went on a France tour to study the method to stop sea erosion. Mind you it was a tour without any Engineers involved. No report was submitted nor anything done to stop the erosion. All that was done was waste of public money on this expensive trip. Dear Politicians, Stop making money and concentrate on the well being of the people for which you have appointed. Plan the roads so that they can withstand any weather for at least… Read more »
First rain is an eye opener to all our civic bodies. They will rectify all the shortfalls in the system. This also happen s in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru. It was a good shower on the 31st of May not only to flood Balmatta even other roads were flooded.
