350 houses damaged, no deaths in Bengaluru lake breach

Bengaluru:  The Hulimavu lake breach damaged several houses with gushing water in the vicinity, but caused no deaths or injuries, an official said on Monday.

“No death or injury was reported at the Hulimavu lake breach, 350 houses were affected with waterlogging,” Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Joint Commissioner Rama Krishna told IANS.

The Hulimavu lake breach occurred on Sunday afternoon due to a man-made cause, said Krishna.

According to Krishna, nearly 4 to 5 feet of water from the 145-acre Hulimavu lake’s water level emptied into the nearby areas.

He said the civic body has brought the situation under control but is yet to zero in on the people responsible for the disaster.

“A police complaint has been launched, there is no CCTV footage to identify the culprits. The police is searching for them,” Krisha said.

The civic body’s revenue department is in the process of assessing the damage, doing it house to house.

Meanwhile, state government has announced a relief of Rs 50,000 for the damaged houses and set up a rehabilitation centre, providing food and clothes to the affected people, Krishna said.
