35th State Level Journalists Conference for the First Time in Mangaluru at Town Hall 7-8 March

Mangaluru: Addressing the journos during a press meet held at Pathrika Bhavan aka Mangaluru Press Club, Shivanand Thagadoor, the President of State Journalists Union said, “We are happy to host our 35th State Level Journalists Conference here in this beautiful coastal town of Mangaluru for the FIRST time, and nearly 2000 plus journos who will be attending this conference are all excited to come down to Mangaluru, where it is known that Mangaloreans are good for hospitality and friendship. This conference of working journalists in Karnataka (KUWJ) will be held in the Kudmal Ranga Rao Purabhavana aka Town Hall here on 7 and 8 March 2020 “.


Shivanand further said, “Mangaluru has left behind several historic footprints in journalism. The first Kannada daily newspaper ‘Mangaluru Samachara’ was started here 177 years ago. The movement of Kannada journalism that began here, eventually spread to other places in Karnataka. Journalists who had remained unorganized till then became organized. Nalwadi Krishnarajendra Vodeyar stood as a backbone for them. The association of Mysuru journalists association took birth in Bengaluru in 1932. The then author and journalist D V Gundappa was the founder president. KUWJ has got units in all the districts of the state and has 7,000 plus journalists as its members now. Dakshina Kannada district working journalists association that was formed on October 6, 1976, is indulging in creative activities without break. It has become a household name by amazing two village stays”.

“It should be noted that the first district journalist’s conference was held in Mangaluru on July 1, 2019, but this State Level KUWJ conference is hosted for the first time in Kudla. Registration of members who will take part in the conference has already begun on the website, and so far over 2000 have registered. Different committees are formed for their preparation. We are happy to note that MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, Dr Bharath Shetty Y and U T Khader have assured their full support to our conference. Over 2K journos from all the districts in the state, and also from various other states, including a few foreign journalists are expected to take part” added Shivanand.

He added, “The conference will be inaugurated by chief minister B S Yediyurappa in the presence of Dharmastala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade, and for the valedictory ceremony Opposition leader Siddaramaiah, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, speaker, ministers, legends of journalism, special achievers and elite will grace the occasion, where on that evening Annual KUWJ awards will be presented to the journalists. Special achiever journalists will be felicitated. A discussion forum on journalists, pros and cons of journalism and development of the coast will be held on both the days.

Jagannath Shetty Bala, the Executive Committee Member, KUWJ; Srinivas Nayak Indaje, President Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Association; and Ibrahim Adkastala, Chief Secretary of District Working Journalists Association, were among others present on the dais during the press meet.
