Mangaluru: The Motto of St Aloysius institution is ‘Lucet et Ardet’-in Latin words which mean ‘Shine to Enkindle’ refer to the mind and heart. It is the deep desire of this Alma Mater to present to the nation and to the world men and women with minds bright with knowledge and creativity, and hearts burning with genuine love and concern for others. St Aloysius Institutions of the Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society, inspired by the person and mission of Jesus Christ, and guided by their motto commit themselves to spread the light of knowledge and wisdom and to kindle the ardor of faith that does justice by forming men and women for others, who are academically accomplished, emotionally balanced, morally upright, socially responsible, ecologically sensitive and professionally dedicated, so that they are a powerful force for the transformation of society.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” had said Nelson Mandela- and for that matter, the PUC students of St Aloysius Pre-University College-Mangaluru have taken their education very seriously and many of them have excelled in their academics, and pursue further with the career of their choice, and later become professionals/leaders to change the world with their contribution/services. Out of the 1749 students of II PUC Board Exam 2017-18, of which 1723 succeeded, and the College with pride felicitated the 417 toppers/distinction holders, witnessed by their parents, staff and students during a “Felicitation Ceremony of Distinction Holders” held at “Loyola Hall” at St Aloysius PU College on Saturday, 9 June 2018.

The ceremony commenced by invoking God’s Blessings led by the College Choir followed by the grand classical welcome dance. Lecturer in Biology Dept and coordinator of the programme, Ms Ashwini V presented the statistical analysis of II PU board exam results 2018 through an audio-video presentation. The programme was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by chief guest Jeevan Saldanha-CEO of Spectrum Industries, Mangaluru and the recipient of the ‘Eminent Aloysian Alumni Award 2018’, along with other dignitaries on the dais namely- Fr Melwyn Mendonca Sj-Principal, Vice Principal of Science Muralikrishna G M, Vice Principal of Commerce and Arts Ms Charlotte D’Souza, Coordinator Ms Deepti Rani-lecturer in Commerce Dept and co-coordinator Inas Dias-lecturer in Hindi Dept.

The Principal Fr Melwin Mendonca SJ congratulated the distinction holders for their hard work and appreciated the efforts of the faculty for moulding the students in academics and instilling values in their life. He proudly said, “The overall results of 98.51% of this year, which is the highest in ten years and a record-breaking of 2000 plus students being admitted to I PUC has spread the joy around here in the campus. Now when you make a choice let it be original and not a copy of others. Find a purpose in life and chose a path that will not only give you a successful career but also a peaceful life. Only hard work and perseverance can lead to success, therefore do not take the paths that look easy, instead, explore new avenues and give your maximum”.

Also advising the students to take care of our Mother Earth and be compassionate to the less privileged in the society, Fr Mendonca Sj further said, ” While you exit out of this college, take a pledge that you will take care of the Mother Nature, and protect the environment in keeping it clean and green. “Beat Plastic Pollution” being the theme for 2018 World Environment Day, make sure you use less plastic, try to recycle it and don’t litter it, since it would harm the environment, and also the lives of marine animals. Be compassionate and appreciate nature. We at St Aloysius, have chosen a path which is different to make the underprivileged with the privileged ones without any discrimination. This indeed is a path less travelled but it has made a difference to all the beneficiaries. I ask you all students to help the less privileged in future and bring change in their lives and transform the world and build a better India. Best of luck in your future academic career”.

Chief Guest Jeevan Saldanha, in his speech, stated that Life is a level playing field and it comes only through hard work. He cited his own example and urged the students to cultivate qualities such as dedication, passion and persistence to succeed in life. He further said, “Among all the awards and recognition that I have received, the ‘Eminent Aloysian Alumni Award 2018’ conferred on me by my Alma Mater is very dear and memorable, which I will cherish forever. This institution is providing all the facilities for the betterment of the students, so grab them when you have the opportunity. You youth have the power to change the world, so do it before it’s too late. I have always believed in this quote-“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life; dream of it; think of it; live on that idea. Let the brain, the body, muscles, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success, and this is the way great spiritual giants are produced. Best of luck young achievers”.

The Rector, Fr Dionysius Vas S J in his message quoted the dream of Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela and told the gathering that they have to discover their dreams and above all should be Men and Women for and with others and also help build a wonderful world. He said, “Be original to oneself and not lose one’s originality because it is the most important value towards success. Make sure you have freedom with greater responsibility, and also love people without losing one’s ability to sacrifice. Be a topper in every field of your life, and not just in your academics. Always dream the big, and make your dreams come true- dare to dream and work hard for it”.

“Don’t ask yourselves what you want to be, but ask yourselves how you can contribute to the society. Quoting Steve Jobs ‘You’ve got to find what you love. The only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. This is a college with a difference-it takes care of the holistic development of the student. Students studying in Jesuit college face life with a great advantage. In the same time, you too must rise to your responsibility to give something back to your college and to your Country of what you have been given. 21 st century belongs to you-take good care of it. And remember that great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance. You are all fortunate to receive education in a wonderful college run by the Jesuits, with the motto ” Shine to Enkindle” -and you have proven it. Good luck in your career and endeavours” added Fr Vas Sj.

On this occasion, two Science toppers- Sandria Ann D’Souza and Neha K M, the Commerce topper Mandara P Shetty, and the Arts topper Madhupreetha Nayak were felicitated, amidst their parents, which was followed by the felicitation of 417 Distinction holders. The toppers after being felicitated, in their speeches thanked the college management and the faculty for their achievements, and proudly said, “Once an Aloysian, Always an Aloysian!”. Ms Deepthi Rani welcomed the gathering and Ms Neetha D’Souza-Lecturer in Commerce Dept proposed the vote of thanks, and Ms Nimmy Alex-lecturer in Biology dept compered the programme.

In conclusion, St Aloysius Institution, Mangaluru which began as a small institution serving a few hundred students for the last 138 years, has today grown into a complex educational enterprise, with various units scattered all over couple of sprawling campuses, where more than 17,000 students, boys and girls pursue their studies in various disciplines. While the purpose of education at St Aloysius PUC is that every student who passes the portals of this College learns to attain the fullness of life not merely by amassing information, but also by transforming into persons with concern and commitment to the marginalized of our society.

And with a dynamic and energetic Fr Melwin Mendonca SJ at the helm of this prestigious PU college as Principal, and with a bevy of nearly 200 plus teaching and administrative/non-teaching staff who strive tirelessly for the welfare of the students not just in academics and co-curricular activities, but also in becoming men and women for others – the next time you decide as to which college to pursue your education after SSLC, think and make St Aloysius PUC your FIRST choice- and I bet you won’t regret your choice! Let me end this report with words of wisdom from Fr Arturo Sosa Abascal SJ-the 31st Superior General of Society of Jesus-

“May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rain fall soft upon your fields,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
You have been chosen to tread the untrodden path and
Lead the many who want to take a new Path”
