5 students Electrocuted When removing Flag Post, CM Announces Rs 5 Lakh Compensation
Koppal: In a shocking incident, five students in Bannikatti Koppal were electrocuted when they were removing the flag post from their hostel premises on August 18.
The deceased have been identified as Mallikarjun Methagal (16), Basavaraj (16), Devaraj Halageri (15), Ganesh Lachanakeri (14) and Kumar Haidar Nagar (15) from Pre Metric School Koppal.
According to sources, On August 15, after the flag hoisting ceremony at Devaraj Urs Residential School in Koppal, the flag was lowered in the evening. On August 18 morning when the boys were removing the flag post, the post fell on the live electric wire resulting in the electrocution of five students.
According to the Koppal police, on August 18 morning two of the students were removing the flag post which was installed in a box filled with soil. While removing the pole, it came in contact with the live electric wire electrocuting them. When other three boys saw their friends, they rushed to help and they too were electrocuted.
CM Yeddyurappa expressing his grief over the tragic incident, announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to the family of each student. CM also ordered the officials to do a thorough investigation of the case.
The Koppala police have registered a case and are investigating.
