6 of a Family Perish in Ghastly Road Mishap in Bekal
Kasaragod: Six of a family died in a ghastly road mishap at Bekal Pallikere in the district around 6-45 pm on Monday, June 13.
The incident took place near the Pallikere panchayat office where widening and renovation work is in progress on the Kanhangad-Kasaragod road. The family involved was of Hameed from Chetukundu Uduma.
The family members were on their way from Chetukundu to take part in ‘iftar’ meet to mark of the breaking of Ramadan fast for the day at a relative’s house in Kasaragod.
The man at the wheel is said to have lost control over it and the vehicle rammed into a culvert and a tree. Hameed’s wife Sakina (39), their children Sajeer ()18) and Saneer (16), Sakina’s brother’s wife Khairunnisa (24) and her daughter Fatima (2) and Ramzeena (25), wife of Irfan, died on the spot.
Sakina’s son Ajmal (4) and Irfan’s 8-month-old child have been injured. Two of the occupants – Sajeer who was driving the car and Khairunnisa – who were critically injured died on the spot. Four others died on the way to the hospital. The eight-month-old child got thrown out of the car and survived with minor injuries.
The car ended up in an extremely mangled state. The police, fire brigade and the immediate neighbours struggled to extricate the dead and the injured.
The Bekal police have registered a case. District collector E Devadasan, MLA K Kunhiraman and others visited the spot.
