600 Cadets Return Home after 10-day NCC Training Camp at St Aloysius College

Mangaluru: The 10- day Annual NCC Training Camp for the academic year 2017-18 at St Aloysius College campus, which commenced from May 21 culminated on May 30, 2018. The management and staff of St Aloysius college were happy to host this Camp, since the camp is being held in the college premises after 58 years of gap. The Camp was organized in association with NCC Group Head Quarters, Mangaluru and the 18 Karnataka Battalion, NCC, and it is one of the major training activities conducted by the Battalion. The aim of this camp was to acquaint and the train the NCC Cadets with the syllabus and various subjects which are to be imparted to them.

The ‘Aims’ of the NCC laid out in 1988 have stood the test of time and continue to meet the requirements expected of it in the current socio–economic scenario of the country. The NCC aims at developing character, comradeship, discipline, a secular outlook, the spirit of adventure and ideals of selfless service among young citizens. Further, it aims at creating a pool of organized, trained and motivated youth with leadership qualities in all walks of life, who will serve the Nation regardless of which career they choose. Needless to say, the NCC also provides an environment conducive to motivating young Indians to join the armed forces.

NCC also tries to Create a Human Resource of Organized, Trained and Motivated Youth; To Provide Leadership in all Walks of life and be Always Available for the Service of the Nation; To Provide a Suitable Environment to Motivate the Youth to Take Up a Career in the Armed Forces’ To Develop Character, Comradeship, Discipline, Leadership, Secular Outlook, Spirit of Adventure, and Ideals of Selfless Service among the Youth of the Country. The ten-day rigorous training camp included military subjects such as drill, map reading, weapon training, field craft, battle craft, firing, PT and yoga. 600 Cadets from 12 colleges and 16 schools belonging to 18 Karnataka Battalion participated in this camp.

The camp activities were conducted by the officers and PI Staff of the 18 Karnataka Battalion NCC along with ANOs from over 16 schools and 12 colleges. Col. Regi Philipose, Commanding Officer of 18 Karnataka Battalion NCC was the Camp Commander, while the Deputy Camp Commandant was Lt. Col. Gracian Sequiera, the Administrative Officer of 18 Karnataka Battalion NCC. On Thursday, 24 May 2018 Col. Anil Nautiyal, Group Commander of NCC Group HQ, Mangaluru had visited the training camp, where he interacted with the cadets, then met Fr Praveen Martis Sj- Principal of St Aloysius College-who later escorted Col. Anil Nautiyal to show the St Aloysius Chapel, also joined by Col. Regi Philipose, Lt. Col. Gracian Sequiera, Lt Col Amit Ashri {Army}, Lt Shakin Raj {ANO-Army Wing}, S/Lt Hariprasad Shetty {ANO-Naval Wing}, and Flying Officer Ashwil Kerkera {ANO- Air Wing}. The whole NCC officers group were astonished at the paintings inside the Chapel, and promised to visit the Chapel again once the painting renovation is done, which is in progress now.

10 ANOs, 19 PI Staffs and 8 Civilian Staffs rendered their services throughout the camp. During the training camp, there will be physical training, Drill, Weapons training, Firing, Personality Development, Health and Hygiene, Communication Skills, and participation in cultural events. There was also Map Reading and Battle Craft training. Cadets were provided the best and hygienic food, including breakfast, lunch and dinner, with expenses borne by NCC HQ. After completion of this camp the cadets received medals- and later each year after training the cadets will receive certificates- A {First Year}, B {Second Year} and C {Third year}. The ‘C’ Certificate is very useful for anyone when they seek for jobs, since many jobs are reserved for those having C certificates.

During the annual training camp, cadets also took part in co-curricular activities, sports/games,etc. Rifle training was given on how to handle .22 Rifles and 5.56 INSAS Rifles. There was also a rally taken around the City by the cadets, where they brought an awareness on Swachh Bharath, Smoking, Drugs, Alcohol etc. Tree plantation was done at St Aloysius College on 28 May, while a lecture on Road Safety and Traffic Rules was done on 24 May. Also a First Aid lecture was organized on 28 May. These are among the many programmes/lectures held during the camp.The main intention was to keep the cadets happy during the entire training period, and see that they are also healthy, without anybody getting sick. Everyone was happy with all the facilities and area provided by St Aloysius College. The Commanders were also happy to note that the participants this year were more than the past annual training camps.

During the valedictory function of the Camp Col. Regi Philipose expressing his gratitude to St Aloysius College and to the Cadets, and rest of the crew said, ” I am happy that this camp ended successfully. We had no injuries nor anyone got sick. Everyone followed the rules and discipline was well maintained. I am also happy to say that I didn’t confiscate any mobile phones from anyone of you-you were great compared to earlier camp cadets. This Camp was to inculcate Unity and Discipline, so that you Cadets become better citizens of this country, and to serve the nation with Integrity and Loyalty- and you all did a great job during this training. Also remember that the NCC-ATC is also aimed at developing character, comradeship, discipline, a secular outlook, the spirit of adventure and ideals of selfless service among young citizens. It will also provide an environment conducive to motivating young Indians to join the armed forces. Be loyal and respect others. Wish you best of luck in your future career and endeavors”

Chief guest Fr Praveen Martis Sj speaking during the occasion said, ” NCC plays a Significant Role in Personality Development. Discipline learnt during student life molds one’s personality. National Cadet Corps (NCC) which works with the motto, “Unity & Discipline” has been doing great service to the youth of this nation in this regard. I am happy that St Aloysius College having the privilege of having all the three wings of NCC- Army Wing, Naval Wing and Air Wing was able to organize this camp, which was a success. I want to stress on four important characters you should develop, namely- Be Competent, Be conscious, Be Compassionate, and Commit yourself. Try to become good human beings, and be self-confidence to reach greater heights. Your attitude is also important. Follow your dreams and make them become true. Wish you all the best in your career”.

Dr AM Narahari-Registrar of St Aloysius College, Lt. Col. Gracian Sequiera and Subedar Major R B Gurung were also present on the dais during the closing ceremony of the camp. Lt. Col. Gracian Sequiera addressing the crowd expressed his heartfelt thanks to his CEO Col. Regi Philipose, for being one of the best bosses he had so far, and as a token of love felicitated Col Regi with a memento. Subedar Major R B Gurung was also felicitated as he was retiring very soon, and also for his tremendous contribution in training camps. Capt. G R Bhat, the ANO at SDM College, Ujire compered the programme, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Capt. Shakin Raj, the ANO at St Aloysius College. ANO’s and PI’s were also honored. Cadets were presented with medals who won in various contests.

Ending this report with the NCC pledge, ‘We the cadets of the national cadet corps, do solemnly pledge that we shall always uphold the unity of India. We resolve to be disciplined and responsible citizens of our nation. We shall undertake positive community service in the spirit of selflessness and concern for our fellow beings’- we feel proud of ourselves”.
