Mangaluru: In a reply to a query from MLC Ivan D’Souza in the state legislative council, state home minister Dr G Parameshwara has stated that the department of jails is in the process of setting up a new district jail for Mangaluru on a stretch of land measuring 64 acres in Kurnad and Chelur villages in Bantwal taluk.
The department of jails is coordinating with the department of public works regarding a design and estimate. Further process will be set into motion once the approval is received, according to him.
Giving information about the present jail in Kodialbail, the minister has stated that security has been intensified in the premises. A baggage scanner, five mobile jammer units and seven CCTV cameras have been installed.
Five police sub inspectors and 23 subordinates from the State Industrial Security Force have been deployed in the jail, he has further said. He also said that in order to monitor the movements of the inmates, regular inspection of the cells and such other steps have been taken.
Besides, those with links with the underworld have been placed separately in high-security cells. Visitors can meet them only in the presence of designated officials.
He has also assured that the issues relating to mobile jammers by way of inconveniece to the surrounding areas are being addressed.
