7 CFAL Students among 41 selected from Karnataka for KA Regional Mathematics Olympiad ’18
7 Centre For Advanced Learning (CFAL) Students among 41 students selected from Karnataka for KA Regional Mathematics Olympiad ’18 (KRMO-2018)
Mangaluru: Addressing the media persons during a press meet held at Mangalore Press Club, Ms Severine Rosario, Program coordinator, CFAL, Mangaluru said, “Seven CFAL Students from Mangaluru are among 41 students selected from Karnataka for KA Regional Mathematics Olympiad ‘2018 (KRMO-2018). Adithya of 10th std is the second topper out of 30 selected in Karnataka in the 8th to 11th standard category. Koustubh and Anmol are the only two students selected from Mangaluru from I PUC and both of them are studying at the “LEARNING CENTRE PU COLLEGE”, Bejai/Kapikad, Mangaluru, a sister concern of CFAL. All selected students qualify for INMO (Indian National Mathematical Olympiad) which leads to International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Mathematical Olympiad is one of the most prestigious examinations conducted by the Government of India under the aegis of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM)”
Ms Rosario further said, “Samarth is in the second position out of the only 6 selected students in the 12th std. category in Karnataka. Anish Hebbar of XII std was selected and had attended the IMO (International Mathematics Olympiad) selection camp held at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education in Mumbai in April-May 2018. He is once again eligible to attend the IMO selection camp in 2019 without going through the initial three stages of selection. We feel proud to say that out of the 41 selections from Karnataka state, seven are from Mangaluru and they all are CFAL students! This is a proud achievement for our region!”
Also speaking during the press meet, Dr. Srikanth Pai Phd, Faculty, CFAL, Mangaluru said, “The first stage of the exam (Pre- RMO also known as PRMO) was held on Aug 19, 2018 at different centres all over India. Total of 360 students from Karnataka were selected for the Second stage exam (Karnataka Regional Mathematics Olympiad – also known as KRMO). Among these 360 students 38 students (10.6%) were from CFAL. KRMO 2018 was held on October 7, 2018 and 41 students have been now selected from Karnataka for the Third stage exam (Indian National Mathematical Olympiad – also known as INMO)”.
“In 2016-17, CFAL student Aditya Prakash, had represented India in the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. After a gap of 20 years, a student from Karnataka was representing India at the International Math Olympiad. It was a big achievement for Karnataka. CFAL is changing the paradigm of learning in the region. Students are now excelling in some of the most challenging examinations in the country that require deep conceptual understanding” added Dr Pai.
Dr Pai further said, “The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the largest, oldest and the most prestigious Mathematics Olympiad for students. While many private entities conduct different Olympiads, there is only one Olympiad that is recognized by the government of India and which is internationally recognised. (Like the Olympics for sports). The Mathematics Olympiad Program in India is organized by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on behalf of the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). To select the Indian team for International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), 30 students selected from INMO will attend a training camp in Mumbai. Out of these a team of 5-6 students will represent India at the International Mathematical Olympiads (IMO) 2019 which will be held in Bath, United Kingdom in July 2019”.
Vijay Moras, Program coordinator, CFAL also speaking during the press meet said, “Until CFAL started promoting National Level Math & Science competitive exams, very few students had cleared or even attempted exams like KRMO, JEE, KVPY etc from this region. This is because, the current education system is focused on board-exam marks and rote-based learning that diminishes true understanding and love for the subject. This year, 8 students from Mangalore (4 from 10th std.) clearing the exam is a historical milestone for this city. If students have strong conceptual understanding and guidance from highly motivated professors, they can achieve outstanding results”.
SAMARTH M BHAT- XII Std; YERMAL KOUSTUBH RAO-I PUC; ANMOL J SHETTY-I PUC; ADITHYA THOMAS- X Std; SATHWIK ACHARYA- X Std; DRUHAN RAJIV SHAH- X STD; RAKSHITHA- X STD; and ANISH HEBBAR (Eligible because of attending IMO camp in April 2018) XII STD
“It is essential to understand the importance of starting early. Just like sports, athletes who have excelled started their career early, and have competed at various levels in the State, the National junior level and then the National Senior level, before playing for the country. In STEM, students who start early and compete in junior national level exams, like Olympiads, NTSE, AMTI, find it easier to compete and succeed at competitive exams like JEE, NEET, KVPY, CA, IAS. Understanding the subject and the ability to see things differently happen when children are introduced to the subject matter in a creative manner at an early age” added Moras.
Vijay Moras further said, “If a student learns for excellence and not for marks, his/ her journey of learning becomes joyful and competitive exams are not a threat. However, the current education system puts excessive importance on securing marks through rote- learning. Since the inception of CFAL, students in Mangaluru have been able to achieve what was previously considered only a dream. CFAL has been consistently working towards changing education paradigms and is striving to empower children to be at their best. The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.”
