75-year-old COVID-19 Victim Finally Cremated at B C Road Crematorium
Mangaluru: The 75-year-old woman who died of COVID-19 was cremated at the Kaikunje Crematorium at 2:00 am ON April 24.
The 75-year-old woman had died on April 23, at 5:20 pm at the Wenlock COVID Hospital. Earlier, the woman had suffered a stroke and admitted to the First Neuro Hospital in Kannur. On April 22 after her throat Swab tested positive for COVID-19, she was shifted to the Wenlock COVID Hospital. Soon after, the district administration sealed down the First Neuro hospital and the surrounding area in Kannur.
On April 23 night, the woman’s body was taken to Pachanady for cremation, but locals opposed cremating the body there. The district administration then took the body to Baddakatte, Bantwal. The locals there too protested against the district administration. The body was later taken to Kaikunje crematorium where also the administration faced opposition to cremate the body. Finally, the doctors convinced the locals educating them on how and what conditions the virus spreads.
Finally, on April 24, at 2 am with the presence of the police, the body was cremated at Kaikunje crematorium in Bantwal.
It is recalled that when the body of the 50-year-old woman was taken to Boloor crematorium, the locals protested against the district administration. Hence the body of the 75-year-old woman was taken to Pachanady. Still, the locals opposed cremating the body there. The MLA of Mangaluru North Constituency Dr Bharat Shetty arrived to the spot and assured the people that the body would not be cremated there without their consent.
The concerned authorities should create awareness among the people about the spread of Coronavirus to avoid such incidents during this critical time.
