Mangaluru : ‘National Doctor’s Day’-this day is observed every year on July 1 to raise awareness about the importance of doctors and medical professionals in our life, and the Day is observed to thank physicians and doctors for their dedicated services to patients. After all, they have looked after us in our worst times. National Doctor’s Day is an opportunity to the people to express their gratitude towards Doctors. This day is dedicated to all medical professionals who work and serve patients round the clock to save lives. Doctor’s Day 2019 is being celebrated for acknowledging services of doctors and their huge contribution to the medical advancement in India.

This year the Doctor’s Day 2019 Theme is “Zero Tolerance To Violence Against Doctors and Clinical Establishment”, and Indian Medical Association announces the theme every year. The theme will raise awareness about the violence happening with the doctors across India. Recently, violence against doctors in different parts of India was making headlines. Keeping in mind the safety and security of doctors during their working hours this theme was announced. And as they say “Better Late Than Never”, the Doctors’ Day celebration was held a day late at Father Muller Hospital-Thumbay, on 2 July 2019 at 4 pm.

The chief guest for the occasion was Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho-the Director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions-Mangaluru, with other dignitaries on the dais, namely- Fr Sylvester Lobo-Administrator and Dr Kiran Shetty- Medical Superintendent respectively of Father Muller Hospital-Thumbay. The programme began with a prayer by Dr Veola D’souza and Dr Sherine- both Interns in Homeopathy department, invoking God’s blessings , followed by welcome address by Fr Sylvester Lobo. The occasion was marked by cutting a delicious chocolate layered cake by Fr Richard Coelho, joined by Dr Sylvester Lobo, Dr Kiran Shetty and Dr P V Kamath- Chief Medical Officer.

Giving a brief history of Dr B C Roy, the Founder of Doctors’Day, Dr P V Kamath said, “National Doctors’ Day is celebrated on July 1 all across India to honour the legendary physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. He was born on July 1, 1882 and died on the same date in 1962, aged 80 years. Dr Roy was honoured with the country’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961. The celebration of the Doctors’ Day is an attempt to emphasize on the value of doctors in our lives and to offer them our respects by commemorating one of their greatest representatives. India has shown remarkable improvements in the medical field and July 1 pays a tribute to all the doctors who have made relentless efforts towards achieving this goal irrespective of the odds”.

Dr Kamath further said, “Doctor’s Day in India was established by the Government of India in 1991 to be recognized and celebrated every year on 1st of July as National Doctors day. It is celebrated to value doctors and their role in country’s development. National Doctors day in India is a big awareness campaign offering great opportunities to all to get aware about the roles, importance and responsibilities of the doctors as well as promote medical professionals to come closer and follow the responsibilities of their profession through dedication and commitment”.

On the occasion all the doctor fraternity in Father Muller Hospital-Thumbay were recognized, and presented with a rose and other goodies by Fr Richard Coelho. In hid presidential address, Fr Coelho said, “These days we don’t find doctors who stay with our institution for many years, since they switch jobs from one institution to another, for a higher scale or better prospects. But to those doctors who have stayed and served FMCI for years, we are very grateful and cherish your long time service. As Doctor’s Day 2019 Theme is “Zero Tolerance To Violence Against Doctors and Clinical Establishment”, in recent days we have heard that doctors being attacked by kith and kin of patients”

“And just two days ago, a higher lady authority from DK Zilla Panchayat abused and insulted in loud voice a young lady doctor at a govt hospital in Puttur, which was very disturbing and appalling. Patients and their family members should think that Doctors are not Gods, and sometimes they also do mistakes like all of us. Doctors work is a mission more than a profession. Doctors should be proud of their profession. But doctors need to keep good communication between them and patients. At FMCI you are all part of our family, therefore you should treat this hospital like your home. To the doctor here is my message-“You are a great doctor, Healing People with your touch. You are a wonderful person as well, bringing Joy and warmth to our hearts. You are an incarnation of God to Others. Thank You for your dedicated and committed service at FMCI”

The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Kiran Shetty, and the programme was compered by Dr Ashika Ranawat and Dr Ambareesh, both Interns in FMHT Homeopathy department. Following the formal function Fr Richard Coelho blessed the ‘Horizontal Steam Sterilizer ‘Autoclave’, and the Dryer machine installed in the newly inaugurated Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) in the hospital.
