30-year-old Bone Cancer patient Gets New Lease of Life at Yenepoya
Mangaluru: A patient with bone cancer got a new lease of life after a successful total humerus replacement was done at the Yenepoya Medical College free of cost.
The patient from Ullala, aged about 30 years was suffering from right arm bone cancer (Osteosarcoma of the humerus). He was informed about the treatment and cost in many reputed hospitals in and around Mangaluru and Bengaluru. He had almost lost hope of saving his right arm.
However, when he consulted the Department of Oncology at Yenepoy. Medical College Hospital, the doctors examined him and suggested humerus replacement, which is a complex surgery and involves a cost of nearly Rs 15 lakh.
Surgical oncologist Dr Jalaluddin Akbar K C, professor and HOD, Oncology and Robotic Centre and his team performed the surgery by replacing the entire arm bone with an artificial metal prosthesis.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Jalaluddin said, “This surgery is technically a difficult and complex one and only a few centers in the world perform such surgery. We are proud to announce that the Yenepoya Medical College Hospital team under the guidance of Dr M Vijaya Kumar (Vice-Chancellor of Yenepoya Deemed to be University and Former Director of Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology) performed the surgery. The patient was discharged two weeks after complete recovery following the successful surgery.”
Jalaluddin further said, “This kind of complex and rare surgery costs around Rs 10-15 lakhs in many hospitals. However, at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, surgery was done free of cost”.
Dr Rohan Shetty and Dr Amar Rao from Department of Surgical Oncology, Dr Imthiaz Ahmed and Dr Abhishek Shetty from Department of Orthopaedics, Dr Guru prasad, Dr Najeeb from the department of Medical Oncology, Dr Saira Pais from Department of Radiation Oncology were involved in treatment.
