Kidneys Donated-Mom to Her Son & A Elderly Nun to Young Nun! Altruism at its BEST seen at Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH)

Mangaluru: Kidney diseases have so far been underestimated in many respects: most people are not aware of their impaired kidney function. In general, kidney diseases are “silent diseases”, most often there are no apparent early symptoms. Many people with kidney diseases are not aware that they have been living with higher risks of cardiovascular diseases, infections, hospitalizations, and of course kidney failure which requires dialysis or transplantation.

Two such cases of heart touching and generosity were witnessed at the Father Muller Medical College Hospital where recently two kidney transplants took place. The following are the two cases that presented themselves at the hospital:

Case 1: Mother’s Love to Her Son:

A case of Immanuel, 35 years hailing from Hassan who worked his own events business was stricken with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in 2018. He hailed from a small family where his father who is bed ridden since the past 5 years and mother who is a home-maker takes care of his father and the household. Immanuel married to Mrs Smitha, who worked for an NGO as clerical staff, has a 5 year old kid Baby Shyni. With the health and economic situation getting worse, he was referred to Father Muller Hospital by a well-wisher. He was under the treatment of Dr Manjunath J (Nephrologist) who patiently guided the family through the process of dialysis and then registering themselves into the Government Jeeva Sarthakathe for a suitable kidney transplant. With ever decreasing health Immanuel’s mother found it hard to see her son suffering and the family falling apart.

Mrs Jayasheela, 58 years voluntarily showed her willingness to donate her kidney to her son so that his family may prosper and he could work for the family. She was counselled by Dr Manjunath J and the Transplant Co-ordinator Ms Reshma Carol D’Sa and the necessary procedures and protocols were followed as per the Government Directives for related Kidney transplant. The transplant was conducted on 01/12/2019. The patient was kept under observation for 2 weeks and has been discharged on 28th February 2020 in stable condition with normal renal function and good urine output. The coordinated efforts by Dr Manjunah Shetty (Urologist), Dr Manjunath J (Nephrologist), Dr Amith D’Souza (Nephrologist), Dr Pramod G R (Nephrologist), Dr Nandakishore, Dr Prashanth Adiga & Dr Vivek Pai (all Urologists) and team including that of the Management of FMCI in reasoning the cost of treatment has uplifted the spirit and rejuvenated the life of Mr Immanuel. He gives thanks for this new lease on life to his mother’s eternal love and the support of his wife and family through the most agonising period of life.

Mr Jayasheela had to undergo necessary investigation and shift to Mangalore for 3 months. She had to shed 10kgs of weight and be counselled and then only was she was declared fit for voluntary donation of her kidney. Her giving as a mother knew no bounds in her son’s new gotten health. She was supported by the ever-caring team of doctors and para-clinical staff along with the management.

Case 2: A Elder Nun’s Love to a Younger Nun:

Devotion to the creator does not make sense if there is no reverence to His creation. This has been made true with a donation of life to Nun from a Nun. In the mid of 2016 Sr Irene Laldinmawii, then 40 years suffered a bout of kidney ailments and was under medication for the same in Mizoram. She served in the congregation of Ursaline Sisters and was in Italy serving the people. Later on transferred to Mangaluru she was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and underwent regular dialysis and therapy under Dr Manjunath J (Nephrologist). She was suggested to undergo kidney transplant and was initiated to register herself in the government organ pool for the same. Sr Aurea D’Souza 66 years who stayed in the same Holy Rosary Convent at Jeppu was moved at Sr Irene’s plight. Sr Irene as a young novitiate on joining the congregation was under the spiritual guidance of Sr Aurea and was her most loved student. The bond of sisterly love and the Love of Jesus Christ made a great revelation that of donating her kidney for the health of her student.

This intention was put in front of Dr Manjunath J and Dr Pramod G R, who perplexed at the unfolding, had no words. He put the nun’s under the Organ transplant coordinator for the paper processing and documentation. This allograft procedure required tireless efforts by the team of doctors and precise documentation and verifications. On one such verification in Malleswaram, Bengaluru at the State Operation Committee Human Organ Transplant, the officer exclaimed that it was the first time such a case has unfolded, where a religious was donation her organ to another religious with the sole intent of helping her own. The case saw no other ill’s in the donation and approved the same in record time. This is the mercy of God.

The transplant took place on 16/02/2020 with observation period of 3 weeks and was discharged in stable condition on 6th March 2020 and presently is in regular form. Both the Nun’s are hale and hearty and are back at work in service of Christ.

They were treated by the Team of Dr Manjunah Shetty (Urologist), Dr Manjunath J (Nephrologist), Dr Amith D’Souza (Nephrologist), Dr Pramod G R (Nephrologist), Dr Nandakishore, Dr Prashanth Adiga & Dr Vivek Pai (all Urologists) and team with the support of the management of FMCI. The Medical Superintendent FMMCH, Dr Uday Kumar extended his support and cooperation to the team as and when required, holding internal hospital committee meetings to ascertain clean and honest transplant between the donor and the recipients.

The Father Muller Medical College Hospital has time and again tried to spread awareness of organ donation. The Father Muller Hospital has its Transplant Coordinators with the District Organ Transplant Commission Dr Kelvin Peter Pais (Liaison Officer) and Ms Reshma Carol D’Sa who liaison between the hospital and the District body which is under the D.C. of Mangalore.
