It Took 10 Years to BUILD Pumpwell Flyover, but It Took Just 4 Months to DEVELOP Few Cracks? Thank God, they are blaming it on the Mother Nature/Rain God, and Not Coronavirus, for the CRACKS?

Mangaluru: “OMG, is that the CRACKS that I am seeing on the middle of the road and on sidewalls”?. Yes, Saar, you are absolutely right!. “Didn’t the flyover got inaugurated just FOUR months ago, and now the cracks have developed, how about that”. “Yes, Saar, you are absolutely damn right again!. This report should have been on the Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” book- so that people have to decide whether to believe this report or not- for the fact that a flyover which took nearly ten years to build, has only taken four months to develop cracks at certain places, on the road and on sidewalls.

Sources reveal that the cracks might have developed due to the heavy rains that lashed the City on Friday 24 April late night and Saturday 25 April early morning. Whether the cracks were due to rain or not- we are seeing the cracks no matter what, the reasons are, and it’s not a good sign for such thing to happen after the Pumpwell Flyover was put for use just four months ago, when it was inaugurated on 1 January 2020. (Ref: Finally, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel Inaugurates Pumpwell Flyover. (Ref: Pumpwell Bale…Pumpwell Bale..! The Much Talked About & Awaited Flyover Inauguration is 101% Doubtful?)

Or could be due to other reason- may be substandard materials were used for the construction and proper curing was not done before the inauguration. I guess, necessary action needs to be taken for the faulty workmanship. And the heavy rains had also created havoc, with the water leaking down from the flyover, had mixed with the red soil on both sides of the service, making it hard for the motorists to navigate.

It was only after a JCB was put into action on Saturday morning, to remove all the debris and stranded water, thereby making it easy for the motorists and pedestrians to move on. All this mess, showing cracks on the road and side walls- and also water accumulating on both sides of service roads- is nothing but the POOR ENGINEERING talents of the so-called Civil Engineers, and the shabby work of the construction company ( Navyuga Udupi Tollway Pvt Ltd ) and its supervisors and workers. And also, this is what happens when you finish work in a hurry just to beat the deadline. Even after so many promised dates of completion and inauguration of this Flyover, and finally being inaugurated on 1 January 2020, this project is in headlines again-and this time for the careless and unscientific work, showing cracks within few months.

There was a lot of pressure on the concessionaire- Navyuga Udupi Tollway Pvt Ltd to complete work on the flyover by 31 December 2019 to facilitate its inauguration on 1 January 2020, by the MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, and other politicians and district authorities, that the project was completed in a hurry, without proper standards and in an unscientific manner- and look what we are seeing now-CRACKS! The work started in September 2010 under four-laning of NH 66 stretch, and surprisingly took nearly 10 years to complete, a project that could make it into the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’? The project that was started at an estimated cost of Rs 671 crore, but later the expenditure went up due to the delay, as part of the four-lane road project on the NH 66 between Talapady and Kundapur. The 90-km stretch, excluding the 17 km between Nanthoor and NITK-Surathkal was completed by the NHAI under the Port Connectivity Project, reveal sources.

And now with these cracks developing, there are chances of once again time for jokes and trolls, like we saw and heard before the flyover was completed. Life has been sad ever since the flyover was inaugurated. Do you believe that the cracks appeared due to rains-come on, give me a break? Luckily, they didn’t say that the cracks developed due to Coronavirus? ha..ha..If one or two rains might have caused this damage, imagine what it would once the city gets hit with more rains during monsoon months. Devaare Gathi! Even though the cracks don’t appear to be too dangerous at the moment, but once heavy traffic starts after lockdown is lifted, more problems could arise- so it is advisable that the concerned authorities do the needful and rectify the issue soon.

With such kind of unscientific and hazardous work of completion, then why are they collecting toll fee. Shame on our civil engineers, our technology and our material! Pre-independence bridges built by the British are still strong and everlasting. This issue clearly shows the low standard of work. How can a few hours of rain can damage a flyover? In the meantime, please don’t blame it on Mother Nature/Rain God! So in conclusion, if one of the marvels of the world, Eiffel Tower took two years to build; Tallest building in the world Burj Khalifa took around five years to build (vertically), and people from NHAI took 10 years to complete this 300 -500 meters long Flyover- but unfortunately now showing bad results in four months- how can we trust our engineers, contractors and the workforce behind our nation’s infrastructure projects?

The construction company should be asked to fix this at no cost to Gov.
