- Change Is Inevitable! Dr ESJ Prabhu Kiran Takes Over as New Principal & Dr Vilma Meera D’Souza as Vice- Principal at Father Muller Homoeopathic College & Hospital, Deralakatte-Mangaluru, (FMHMC & H), during the Installation Ceremony held on Wednesday 16 September 2020 at the College Auditorium.
Mangaluru: Yes, change is inevitable. It is a fact of life that individuals, organizations and nations alike have no choice but to deal with. Those who are able to acknowledge this fact and cope with change will survive. Those who are able to seek out change and actively embrace it will thrive. And yes, change is constant in the sense that it is always present. CHANGE-we need to Embrace it! Changes trigger progress. Things move forward and develop because of them.
Each change is a turning page. It is about closing one chapter and opening another one. Changes bring new beginnings and excitement to life. And remember—if there were no change, there would be no butterflies! And at Father Muller Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital, Deralakatte, in the outskirts of Mangaluru, saw the CHANGE in the PRINCIPAL and VICE-PRINCIPAL on Wednesday, 16 September 2020 at 3 pm, during the Installation Ceremony held at the College Auditorium. Dr ESJ Prabhu Kiran took over the baton from Dr K Shivaprasad, who led FMHMC & H as Principal for seven years, and Dr Vilma Meera D’souza, took over as Vice-Principal from Dr ESJ Prabhu Kiran, who was the 5th VP of FMMC&H for seven years.
Dr ESJ PRABHU KIRAN (Principal) and Dr VILMA MEERA D’SOUZA (Vice Principal)
Father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital is a unit of the pioneering Father Muller Charitable Institutions, (FMCI) founded by Rev Fr Augustus Muller, a German Jesuit missionary. Fr Muller was the grandson of Augustus Muller who was the school teacher of Dr Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of Homoeopathy. No wonder Fr Muller fell in love with Homoeopathy and popularized it in Mangaluru and other parts of the country. Father Muller Charitable Institutions had its humble beginning in the Kankanady Hill as a small dispensary in 1880, called the Homoeopathic Poor Dispensary. Father Muller was the first Indian Repertorian and also has authored many Homoeopathic books.
The tiny acorn of the FMCI has grown into a mighty oak tree of one of the premier medical institutions of the nation and its hallowed portals a much sought after medical training and education nursing care and teaching experience. In the year 1980, FMCI celebrated its centenary and to commemorate this event a decision was taken to institute a Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital at Kankanady. The College was established in 1985 which soon grew into a leading institution to provide Homoeopathic Medical Education. It is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore and recognized by Central Council of Homoeopathy, New Delhi.
In 2006 the Homoeopathic Medical College was shifted to its 36.52 acres, lush green beautiful landscaped campus at Deralakatte which houses Homoeopathic Hospital, ladies & Gents Hostels, Chapel, state of the art game facility, Gym and a Botanical Garden. The PG courses were started with 3 basic subjects in 1998 namely Organon of Medicine, Homoeopathic Materia Medica, Repertory and enhanced with four speciality subjects in 2007 namely, Practice of Medicine, Paediatrics, Homoeopathic Pharmacy & Psychiatry. And Dr ESJ Prabhu Kiran and Dr Vilma Meera D’Souza, as Principal and Vice-Principal respectively, should be overwhelmed and proud to lead this prestigious institution.
DR SHIVAPRASD K (Out- Going Principal)
The Installation ceremony began with prayer service by Sr Sowmya and Team, followed by welcome address by Dr G Rajachandra Cheeranjivi- a faculty at FMHC & H, during which having praise for out-going principal said, “Dr Shivaprasad K is a Man with pages of words books of action and a library of achievements. He is an Individual with unparalleled vigour, who always made us think the sky is the limit. Indeed the firstborn of his kind to a mother called Father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College, Dr Shivaprasad showed the path of not only taking from the college but also giving back his grandeur of potential magnanimously for decades. His role play as a teacher, mentor, coordinator, convenor, moderator, vice-principal, and the principal is always an inspiration and also a point of reference for the people who follow. We followed his footsteps diligently in receiving both life and life partners from this Institution”.
“He is exemplary for his achievements as a student, teacher, academician, vice-principal. principal and also a Rotarian. His public relations skills and a balanced lifestyle not lessening the value of a single domain of his acquaintance inspires everyone. Maybe playing cricket, cycling or even running a marathon with his son, challenging every barrier – proving again that age is just a number. A sharp-pointed nose always talks of his focus and a stern look describes his orientation and when he is smiling there can be ambiguity but when he laughs out loud we know the job is done. The year 2020 can be understood as the year of changes, Fr Muller HMC will remember the achievements and the glory bestowed on its heritage because of Dr Shivaprasad’s leadership. “If they ever tell my story, let them say I walked with giants. Men rise and fall like the winter wheat, but these names will never die. Let them say I lived in the time of Hector tamer of horses. Let them say, I lived in the time of Achilles.”-these are the words written by Wolfgang Peterson, and we all will proudly say that we worked under the legacy of Dr Shivaprasad K” added Dr Rajachandra.
Following the handing over ceremony of the posts of Principal and Vice-Principal between the newly appointed principal/vice principal and former principal/vice principal, both the new Principal Dr ESJ Prabhu Kiran and Vice-Principal Dr Vilam Meera D’Souza in their acceptance speech assured that they will do their best to take FMHMC&H to greater heights, requesting the management, staff and students to support them in their work during their tenure. Expressing his sentiments, the out-going principal Dr Shivaprasad thanked everyone who had played an important role during his tenure as principal for seven years and concluded saying that he accomplished what he dreamt to reach FMHMC&H to greater heights, to the best of his abilities.
It was now time to install the new Management Committee members, namely- Dr Madhava Krishna Kamath (UG & PG Programme Adviser); Dr Girish Navada (Medical Superintendent); Dr Deepa Pais/Rebello ( Deputy Medical superintendent) MS); Dr Jyoshna Shivprasad (PG Programme coordinator); Dr Jacintha Monteiro (UG Programme Coordinator); and Dr Ranjan Clement Britto ( Interns Co-coordinator), by lighting the traditional lamp, symbolizing the New Beginning. Young and dynamic, a Man with lateral thinking, straight talk and circumferential address to most problems, Administrator of FMHMC & H, Fr Roshan Crasta speaking on the occasion said, “One of life’s constants is change. We grow. We age. Technology reinvents each new day. Some relish change; others resist. Change is something that is inevitable. Change is good. Progress is impossible without change. Today, we have the change in our principal, while Dr Shivaprasad had done a tremendous job in taking this institution to greater heights, name and fame, I am confident Dr ESJ Prabhu Kiran will follow in the footsteps of his predecessor in taking FMHMC&H to still greater heights, and earn name and fame under his tenure, along with Vice Principal, Dr Vilma D’Souza”.
Addressing the audience, Fr Richard Coelho, the Director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions said, “Change is inevitable, it brings progress, new thinking, new leadership and new growth. The management having trust has appointed Dr Prabhu Kiran to lead this college, and earn accolades from all quarters. A leader is one who leads everyone, and under the leadership of Dr Prabhu Kiran, we are confident that he will take this institution to greater heights, along with the support from Vice Principal, Dr Vilma D’Souza. Change has brought progress to FMHMC&H, ever since Dr Shivaprasad took over the responsibilities, who even rescued the institution from emerging problems”
Fr Coelho further said, “Dr Shivaprasad’s efforts brought laurels, recognition and name to this institution during his tenure as principal, and having humility and respect to seniors, he was liked by all. At FMCI we don’t differentiate between caste, creed, religion-we treat everyone equally, like our family members, because we are all children of God as ONE. You all belong to Father Muller family. None of us is indispensable. Taking responsibility is a must, and together research and publication are also important to grow. both the projects. At FMCI we work in a team without any differences between each other, and we concentrate on quality health care and good service. We give concessions to poor patients, because our mission is to serve the poor, and we will continue doing so forever, with our Motto ‘Heal and Comfort’.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Heleena D’Souza, the compere, while the other compere was Dr Deeraj Fernandes, both faculties at FMHMC & H. I end this report with quotes on Homeopathy by a few renowned people-
“Homeopathy cures a greater percentage of cases than any other method of treatment. Homoeopathy is the latest and refined method of treating patients economically and non-violently”- Mahatma Gandhi.
“Homeopathic remedies can be effective in both major and minor ailments during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Sometimes homoeopathy can help prevent problems and complications in ways that conventional medicine cannot match”- Judy Norsigian and Jane Pincus, co-authors of The New Our Bodies, Our Selves
“The introduction of homoeopathy forced the old school doctor to stir around and learn something of a rational nature about his business. You may honestly feel grateful that homoeopathy survived the attempts of the allopaths to destroy it”- Mark Twain.
“It is not as if our homoeopathic brothers are asleep: far from it, they are awake–many of them at any rate–to the importance of the scientific study of disease”-Sir William Osler, “The Father of Modern Medicine”
