Rising above the pandemic constraints and helping others in need, today the real-life Covid Warriors are playing a pivotal role, Kudos to all these Covid Warriors, who are stepping out to work daily, who maintain strict isolation at home. Compelled by their jobs to step out every day, the doctors, police, nurses, security guards, ambulance drivers, health care workers, among others are Traffic Control Wardens, who are part of the army of ‘corona warriors’ helping the society battle the pandemic. The coronavirus story is not about one person or two on opposite ends of the social spectrum. Many thousands of others. who necessarily have to physically interact with people outside, maintain strict distancing norms at home to ensure their families don’t get infected, even if they happen to.

Maxim Moras and his Family
On Saturday, 19 September in the evening, when it rained incessantly in the city, among the slow-moving and reckless-moving vehicles, one man traffic stood beside/middle of the NH-66, controlling the vehicles- and motorists and pedestrians who noticed his service clicked photos and uploaded on social media, one among them being Fr Oswald Monteiro, the Director of CODP, (which is near Padua College), and uploaded the photos and video on social media. Yes, for the last few days Mangaluru has witnessed heavy rains, and on Saturday evening, the rains coupled with winds hit the area very hard, and in that weather, Maxim was seen controlling the heavy traffic. You know the routine in Mangaluru, when it rains—the roads get flooded, traffic gets slower and there is chaos all around. And so was the situation on Saturday evening/night aon NH 66 near Padua College.
This kind of situation is also when people want to reach home quickly or at least take shelter from the rain, but the traffic either keeps moving or just does not move ahead, which worsens the situation- and this has to be controlled manually- and the right man at the helm of the job is Maxim Moras. The efforts of the brave Maxim who managed to see that the traffic flowed in a continuous and smooth manner in the pouring rain, should be commended. Inspired by Maxim’s dedication, Fr Monteiro recorded his video and posted it on social media, and soon enough, people started appreciating the hardworking Deputy Chief Traffic Warden and the video went viral.

Speaking to team Mangalorean, Maxim said, “During the course of my profession of transporting school children, I would notice the traffic congestion in the city roads and the hardship the school children and the elderly had to face while crossing the roads, especially near the school premises. This provoked me to render my service to the people. I’ve been rendering my service to the school children to cross the road neat St. Agnes School/College, Bendore and St. Theresa School, Bendore-well road, from the past 18 years. From 2015-17, I have been giving my service as a traffic warden at Nanthoor Junction between 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the evenings. Currently from the last three years, I have been in my service in front of Padua High School on NH-66 in the evenings from 5:30 to 8:00”.
“The service which I am rendering is free of remuneration, purely selfless and honorary, and this is a small contribution from my side to the society. I am satisfied with this work and I have determined myself that I would continue this as long as I have the strength to do it. I never expected that my service would be noticed and appreciated by the society. ACP Udaya Nayak, had appreciated me and encouraged me to join the traffic warden squad, a few years ago by looking at my service, and I was promoted as Deputy Chief Traffic Warden in that Organization. Presently, I have been giving my selfless service as a member/Deputy Chief Traffic Warden of the Traffic Warden Organisation(TWO)” added Maxim.
Noticing my service rendered by Maxim, and appreciating his service and dedication he had been honoured by many organizations and education institutions, to name a few- by St Theresa School, Bendore; St. Agnes School-Bendore,, Jeppu Seminary Church-Jeppu, Barke Friends, The Parents Teachers Association of St Theresa School; The Mangalore Police Commissioner, Kadri Cricketers, Skanda Bhajana Mandali-Neermarga, Kids Paradise Kindergarten-Bendore. “I was not so keen and feeling not proud of the public honours that have come on my way, as a part of my recognition of my service to the society, however, I have humbly accepted them as encouragement and hoping that many more people would come forward to contribute their bit to the society, in whichever way possible” said Maxim emotionally.
In conclusion, no doubt, we are living in the times of coronavirus – a global emergency that has put an abrupt stop to everyone’s daily life. In these gloomy times, when many of us are confined in the comforts of our homes to stay safe during the pandemic, there are many out there who have decided to step out of their comfort zone and do their bit for those who are not as fortunate, including Maxim Moras, who has decided to go an extra mile at a time of an ongoing pandemic. While everybody is talking about the frontline workers like doctors and other healthcare staff, Team Mangalorean on behalf of the citizens of Mangaluru, and those visiting Mangaluru, and although Maxim is not at the frontline but we want to appreciate his efforts and service during the pandemic, doing his bit in this time of crisis. May God bless Maxim Francis Moras, and may he keep up the good work that he is entrusted with.
