A Beacon of Hope: PDA Device Closure Successfully Performed on 4-Month-Old Baby Weighing Just 4 Kgs at KMC Hospital, Mangalore

Mangalore: In a remarkable medical achievement, KMC Hospital, located at Dr. B R Ambedkar Circle, has successfully performed a non-surgical Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) device closure on a 4-month-old infant weighing just 4 kg. This delicate procedure was necessitated by the infant’s recurrent respiratory infections and was previously deemed too risky for surgery due to her low weight, which led to her being turned away by another medical facility.

The groundbreaking procedure was conducted by Dr. Padmanabha Kamath, a senior interventional cardiologist at KMC Hospital, who was supported by a skilled team of anesthesiologists and cath lab technicians. Despite the inherent challenges posed by the infant’s size, the medical team executed the procedure with exceptional precision and care.

“This case was unique because of the infant’s weight,” stated Dr. Kamath. “Performing the closure required not only advanced expertise but also seamless teamwork across specialties. We’re thrilled to give this little one a new lease on life and ensure she can grow up healthy and strong.”

The success of this non-surgical PDA closure highlights KMC Hospital’s commitment to providing innovative, life-saving treatments in the face of complex medical challenges. Traditionally, PDA closure has necessitated surgical intervention; however, advancements in medical technology now allow for a safer and less invasive approach, particularly beneficial for vulnerable patients like infants.

Saghir Siddiqui, Regional COO of KMC Hospital, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “We are proud to have been able to offer this state-of-the-art treatment to such a young patient. It reflects our hospital’s dedication to providing the best care, especially in critical cases. Our team’s expertise and ability to adapt to challenging circumstances have made this achievement possible.”

KMC Hospital continues to serve as a beacon of hope for patients requiring advanced medical interventions, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to hope and healing even in the most challenging situations.
